Not true. I have the airtel Mobile office prepaid (Rs.99 per week, unlimited) and works like a charm. Yes, it is on a 2g.

Regarding the APN settings, Apple has put in the APN settings for Airtel and Vodafone India when they upgraded to 2.0 and that is the reason you don't see the option to change the APN setting under Settings-> General. I just restarted the phone after subscribing to the MO package and I was good to go.
