Hmm....never heard of tires losing grip after 5000 miles. Usually grip improves in a regular tire after wear because of the self 'shaving' effect.

There is also a phenomenon of scrubbing new tires (heat cycling) to get better life and grip but that usually applies to slicks and R-compounds. Maybe it had an effect here.
