Hi,
First to answer Xmachine:
1) Yes FE will drop in extreme conditions. As engine breathing will be easier, more air means more fuel.
2) With just the free flow and air filter i will respond pretty good, but it will be better if good porting has been done, over size valves etc.

SLK
Strange that the IAC is not functioning properly. Does the car idle at all? what are the exact symptoms?.
The IAC's work is just to keep enough air flowing to idle the car well when the throttle body (butterfly) is not open. Once accelerating (pressing the throttle) the IAC has no work. So its not of any concern when running.
Now on the knocking part : .... The IAC wont play any role in this at all... but if the valve is not opening correctly it can create a huge restriction, which will lower the idle dramatically which you will feel by heavy vibration. Get the IAC repaired else go to the local scrap yard and pick up one from a throttle body assembly etc. WHich car do you have?. Does the engine pink only on hard acceleration or always?. What is the ignition timing set at?

Cheers
Dom
