Technocrat, this post is excellent. As someone who has also been doing long drives, I can only add very little. But still here is my two cents worth.

1. WIAA ( Or any Automobile Association ) road tulips are a good alternative to TTK maps etc. I have used them often and are quite reliable. But as I have posted in another thread, my latest route maps for my forthcoming summer trip to Kerala, I found was out of date.

2. I keep track of fuel usage, as well a log of my travels and Kms reading and time etc. I plan to post my logs of my 1997 Kerala trip online here so that everyone can access them and benefit.

3. List of COCO PPs enroute to ensure unadulterated petrol on the way.

4. List of hotels / motels / lodges enroute so that you can call in advance and check in, should program change for some reason.
