I have always insisted that GM India is the one manufacturer to watch out for. After offering the Optra at great prices and an Industry-first 4 year standard warranty, the highly competent Tavera has been launched at 5.4 lacs for the base non-power steering/non a-c model with the fully loaded variant peaking at 8.44 lacs in New Delhi.

This pricing is a bang in the territory of its chief competitor - The Toyota Qualis. Being a full generation newer and having that magic Japanese feeling, the Tavera is all set to give Toyota a run for its money.

Whats even more surprising is the fact that the cheapest Scorpio is now more expensive than its Japanese competition. Mahindra was talking of a non-Turbo (read cheaper) variant of the Scorpio at 60000 less than the currently available Turbo-charged model. Time to speed the launch up, wot? I also expect Toyota to bring in the latest gen Qualis before the end of 2004.

News was sourced from The Economic Times.
