I was told not to use a flash on a child under 12 months. Their pupils cant dilate fast enough. If you need a flash use a bounce. I used a Canon G2 with a 420EX for m son's early years.
There are qute a few cams with a hot shoe and is you mate one of them to a bounce you can get an impressive combo. Of the lot I prefer the Canons (current version of the G2 is the G7) and Nikons though.
The G7 retials for about $550-600 about $100 more than a S3. Add a 430EX flash and you are looking at $750-800.
