i have to agree with you here. the domestics, though they seem inviting at first will turn out to be very painful in the long run - the build quality is poorer compared to the imports - though they are priced better and dealers do give out better discounts than the imports.

the base C-class (or the 3-Series) both have a base price of @ $31k but with options and taxes the price can shoot up and nudge the budget - depending on how picky Technocrat's cousin is. can't go wrong with either though. can also check out the base Audi A4 / A3 which also fall in his requirements. BMW has the advantage of having the best warranty among the biggies.

ofcourse, he can't go wrong with any of the other European or Japanese imports either but i guess a lot of people have established that he'll be better off staying away from some domestics. they all have decent choices within his price range.

Saab is a good brand which a people tend to overlook. the Saab 9-3 and 9-5 are good cars. another upcoming domestic brand is Saturn which is trying to model itself on Opel / Vauxhall. they have a decent offering in the form of the Aura sedan (modelled on the Vectra).

if he intends to drive around a lot and keep the car long-term, then i'd recommend staying away from the premium segment as maintenance bills can run high after initial warranty expires - extended warranty is available for a price.

also, if he won't mind a used car then certified pre-owned opens up a newer window for him offering a higher-end car within his budget requirements.
