Astra is a great car to go from one place to another in maximum possible comfort. But don't expect it to set road on fire in its stock condition.
To answer your points one by one

Performance is sufficient. If you like cruising then its a great car to drive. But if you are boy racer look elsewhere
Maintenance will be expensive. Period
Fuel efficiency - some people tell horror stories about Astra FE. But somehow I get pretty decent FE. About 10 km/l in city
It is one of the most comfortable car
Unless you know the right person getting genuine spare can be difficult outside of GM workshop

And yes Astra was launched with new engine soon after it was launched. The newer engine was much smoother than older one but power output was same. (75BHP for non-MPFI)

At the end of the day despite being Astra owner/lover I would not advice you to buy this car. Its a great car for sure but its time is running out fast. There are better alternatives available today.
