I would think 2 factors would detemine the new vent designs:
1. AirFlow - Think Wind Tunnel - Better dispertion of air through round vents versus square/rectangle etc. (I do not have an IIT degree to back this up!
)
2. Design Language - I think Round and smooth shapes convey a more modern design language - less breaks in design and there is a nice flow - If the whole dash is round and then you have a bunch of rectangles thrown in - it looks wierd.
