Hi Ragul,

Some day eventually is going to be your 1st time. Better learn at impromptu get-togethers like this where every one has time for each other than organized annual/paid/sponsored events where it actually is impossible to handhold 1 vehicle thru the event. If it helps, I am jeepless and dont mind being ur personal spotter for the 2 days

Also remember one can always say NO to a obstacle and sit it out or find a easier way out. So dont worry, bring it on...

Thx
Santosh

Hi Santosh

Everybody in the OTR is likely to have done some mods with gear ratios, body lift, rock sliders, bumper fender winches etc. Mine is a "Virgin" 2010 model. Everybody else is likely to have a decade old (or more) vehicle bought cheap and modded for OTR. And this OTR vehicle is in most cases their 2nd car.

My Gypsy is my only car and my daily commute. I cannot afford downtime in the Garage (I have just suffered 6 weeks of downtime due to tardy repair service from MASS) and I dont want to see the underbody grated and hammered yet.

However what I believe in is a method of learning where you watch and experience closely then sleep over the "problem". I learn in my sleep and trust me it really works. More importantly to visualize what mods I want to do to my gypsy and to tickle my aspirations and ambition to master some level of OTR'ing skills - over days and weeks as I sip my cuppa coffee and muse over it. I dont want to blindly throw in an asset that cost me 6.5 lacs over the rocks with no mental preparation having NEVER seen an OTR.

Lastly, correct me if I am wrong - In order to be a good OTR driver, one has to graduate from being a good spotter. I am not going to learn much sitting in my car and "chickening out" at every serious obstacle. But getting off a vehicle and observing what the spotter observes and knowing what is recommended versus what is cautioned against, while standing next to him, will likely teach me better.

Thanks very much for understanding guys. I hope one of you will invite me to sit in.

Regards
--Ragul

Raghul,

Understand your concern. Hop into one of the offroader. We are accommodative.

As regards the vehicle age and cost, I should clarify here that some have brought new vehicles on trail and it's their choice. Goodt spotter is always a good offroader first. not otherwise.

Hi all,

42 offroading vehicles is quite a good respose coupled with 65 people. This offroading trail is a find by M P Sreenivasan.

Schedule of OTR:

Assembly point = Columbia Asia Hospital, immediately after decent from Hebbal flyover onto Bellary Road at 1 p.m.

Re-grouping at Shanti Sagar Hotel, Chikkaballapur town at 3 p.m. latest. Pack your dinner and leave for the OTR venue.

OTR starts at 3.30 p.m. after briefing and ends at 8 p.m. on a 7 kms trail of river bed. Camp for the night by bonfire.

Next morning at 7.30 a.m. leave for next trail which is full of challenges like sand dunes, water pools and shifty sand.
Expect to end offroading by Mid day and break off to return to bases.

What to expect:

Dry river bed full of shifty sand.
Some sand dunes to pose challenge
Few Water bodies to wade through
Camping by night
re-union of offroaders

Essentials to carry by every offroader/ person

5 ltrs of drinking water
5 -10 litrs of radiator and wash water
food for night and breakfast next morning.
short eats like energy bites, biscuits , beverages, etc.
Medicine if you are course, first aid kit
Spares and consumables, tools
Tyre inflaters/ Foot pumps
Tow Rope and a paid D-shackles
High lift Jack if avaialble or hydraulic jacks for recovery and tyre changing if need be
Tent and Sleeping bags
Rain gear as we expect monsoon showers
Make sure your vehicle has 4wd functioning with H/L
Tyres with good tread.

Please take note, highway tyres/non offroading tyres won't perform well on sand.

Experts here, please let us know the right tyre pressure on sand to have better traction.

Let's roll.

Warm regards,
Dwarak

Not an expert, but from previous experience for better traction on sand, keep 12-15 psi on AT tyres and around 10 on NDMS.

Pease note lower pressures might be possible but not recommended since incorrect rim size and tyres can be an issue then. Also carry reliable tyre pressure gauge and inflators, if plan is to do other terrains on second day. Pen type gauges are not at all reliable.

Ps: I am dropping out due to an official trip out of town this week :(. Have fun guys.

From what I understand for NDMS its about 8 psi on sand. Experts please comment.

Anyone driving back on Saturday night itself or Sunday early morning?

Hi folks,

On a lighter note, organisers have been making arrangement for dinner on first day and breakfast on second day morning.

Please note that the participants need not bring their food packed. You may bring light snacks and munchees, biscuits and other essentials listed out in earlier mail.

See you all on 18th and 19th June.
