Hi Parm,

The FC was prepared by Shabbir bhai here in Bangalore. Shabbir put the DI engine and NGT520 gear box and did the roll cage and other mechanicals, This vehicle sports iron man shocks all round and iron man winch and diff lock in the rear.

This vehicle toppled on the first day itself of the RFC event, reason: Narrow axles

Updates from the RFC! These are merely a taste of things to come. Samurai will be sharing a detailed post-event report with us later.

That white Thar with hard top and forest cutter wire installed is Prabhus from Alpana Industries Hyderabad.

No - 3 position is held by Gerrari offroaders - Chandigarh. A reguar hard core off roading bunch. Their jeeps are mostly submerged in water upto the window level. They visit us here in Delhi too in North India Offroad Club trips.

At this stage I should only say a good begining and stop. For a real Rain Forest Challenge is something like this folks!

Here we see raiding some land in front of a Hospital !

I agree
This is not rain forest challenge.
They just dug a pit outside city and did some stages. Even Palar challenge is more exhaustive and grand in comparison.

Regular offroading in foothills of the Himalayas or what NIOC does in Gurgaon outskirts is a better challenge, and involves more obstacles.

If this is RFC, spending many lakhs on vehicle preparation for this thing is a joke.
This is no Rain Forest Challenge.

Heck, there are so many amazing threads of OTRs in the western Ghats, near coorg, near Bangalore, Chennai etc., which are more involved.

Good OTR, Yes

Good Obstacles, Yes!

Should this be called RFC and make believe everyone who knows what the malaysian RFC is - Absolutely not!

At least the guys could have seen TBhp threads on how the mumbai boys did it in 1st year (Natural course) and 2nd year (Manufactured course) - this event would raise a lot of uncomfortable questions surely, that too at the 75,000Rs price tag!!

Desertfox, tsk1979, svsantosh,

Jumping the gun eh?

Maybe we should wait for all the stages to be completed and covered here? The schedule talks about these being the Prologue stages and the "Predator" and "Twilight" stages are yet to be covered. AFAIK, they are usually the tougher ones.

Am quite sure the organizers will be more worried about diluting their RFC brand rather than anyone seeing these pics here who's probably not even present at the venue.

What I'd really like to know is more specific information about the kind of vehicle mods that are being seen on the participant vehicles. Lots to learn from there.

Cheers,
Adi

I dont see how a urban waste land setup behind a residential colony would shift to a actual forest setup, would like to be proved wrong though.

Guys, you are jumping the gun. The obstacles today were extremely tough. Typical Jeeps seen in Indian OTR won't have a chance.

Its not about toughness of obscales. Its about "is it in the Rainforest, or pit dug on the outskirts of a city in Goa"

We can take some construction materials, and make very very tough obstacles inside a 5 acre plot. But that won't be RainForest Challenge.

True on an offroad rally there is a prolouge with invitees and a lot of spectators.

Then there are transport sections, a night halt camp and competitive stages commence in the morning usually a six to seven hour run covering 140 to 150 km. But here the emphasis is more on BHP than torque the Gasolene engine BMW X 5, Nissnan Patrols Dodge Ramcharges Toyotas and Renault concept 4x4 start gaining lead. Its 70 % driver talent and 30 % vehicle you will discover that a modified Landrover Discovery finished among top 3 that day.

Then comes a 60 to 70 K night drive on trails and then a forest challenge.

Have thse guys marked out such a route ?
Was rally GPS with the waypints rented out to all participants or was there an upload service ?
Is there a radio communications control set up in India a License is required for all this as well including FRS channels with a mere 2 KM range.
Was enviromental clearances obtained to take the rally through tropical rainforest. Did the ministry of tourism co-operate ?

On the last day there is a podium finish with a little demo of the cars. Followed by Lunch / Dinner / Media briefing.

There are no international teams in the event. Why ? Why have the winners of last few years not come. They sail their vehicles on ferries even to Malaysia or Thailand or Phillipines so why not Goa ?

Does this event not hold much challenge or they are waiting for teething problems to be over ?

The Western Ghats are very scenic and an off roaders dream.

Lets see over the next four days as to what is actually dished up.

For future events North India too holds plenty of promise.

Prolouge in a Gurgaon outdoor hotel.
Challenges section in the Aravallis.
Transport to Jaipur.
Offroad sand trails sections followed by a major trasport section then solid dune challenges in Jaisalmer.
Prize distribution in Jaisalmer then transport back or carriage back.

Give me a SWB LC Prado 120 with 2 inch lift and Old Man Emu Nitro suspension kit, I will win it!

Speak to someone who survived till today, Palar in comparison is cake walk. Even last years tent accommodation is being termed as luxury. Ones with real survival tricks and kit can only enjoy this!

Yup just hold a lil while longer.

You are grossly mistaken, i was there on day 1, 2 & 3. Not a single vehicle could do it easily. Day 1 & 2 were prologue and more of a shake down but that was definitely at our local competition level. By day 3 they had moved out and were in semi forested area, the obstacle and terrain became quite difficult and rain added to the fun. Then they moved on to the camp where the real fun started. True to its name, this was proper jungle camp. Ones with only proper skills and equipment can survive here and SS was in the evening.

Final stage is gonna be mother of all trail, this is not yet driven by a single vehicle and only a walking recce (again true to international RFC values ) have been done. Its gonna be a 15 hour long SS, a lil birdie told me.

So guys, you are way off in predicting where this competition is going... relax, wait for Samurai and others to come back and report. Trust me it is going to be one hell of a report to look forward to!!

ps: I was there for first 3 days, so i know what i am talking about.

Today morning the competitors have started on the last and most important stage of RFC, the Twilight Zone. The teams have entered the forest at 6:30AM.

The score standings until yesterday are as follows:

The 2014 Rain Forest Challenge @ Goa-rfc1318.bmp.jpg

The 2014 Rain Forest Challenge @ Goa-rfc_till_24.jpg

You may be surprised at the number of 20 and 0 score for many teams. The score 20 means they DNFed (Did Not Finish), 0 means they DNSed (Did Not Start). Many DNF were caused due to competitors intentionally forfeiting the SS pretty much after entering. This was mainly due to strategic decision by teams to preserve the vehicle for the final Twilight zone. Many teams DNFed half the SS intentionally. The 0 score was mainly because the teams couldn't participate due to injury or breakdown.
