Default (Bangalore) Arenara-Indlibele Lake Bed, 2 Aug 2009

Hi all,

Yesterday I was feeling quite restless, now that my jeep is ready. I remembered seeing a dry lake bed when I was returning from Pearl Valley a few months ago. The terrain had looked slightly interesting at the first glance, so I thought I'd go check it out.

I called my friend Moiz, and off we went. There are two ways to approach this.

1. Hosur Road: when you are on Hosur Rod, way past Electronics City, take a left at the Attibele junction.

2. Sarjapur Road: Keep going on Sarjapur road, pass Total Mall, Decathlon Cash and Carry, Railway Crossing. Then you come across a 4-way junction that indicates that a right turn would lead you to Devasandra. Take that right turn.

This lake bed is between two villages Arenara and Indlibele. There is a Shiva temple on one side of the road, and the other side is the lake.

The approach itself is promising, a steep descent on a rough trail. We got down, explored around the lake bed area, then found a trail leading off into the bushes. The trail went on and on, into what looked like a veritable forest.

There are lots of opportunities for good off-roading challenges. The general terrain, however, is not too unfriendly. So in my view this location would also be a good place for training for newbies (like myself).

If anyone more experienced than me wants to recce this place over the weekend, please PM me.

Note:
1. We had forgotten to take a camera, and had to make do with a mobile phone camera. Sorry about the poor quality of the pics.

2. @Jeep gurus: I ventured out in a solo vehicle, but we were careful to not go too far from civilization, and not to try any crazy stunts.

Now for the pics:

Nice find there Rohan. Let's go there soon. I am sure if it rains then this place will be good.

PS: If nothing happening this weekend then let's go here on Saturday/Sunday

Thanks, dwaraka and khan_sultan. Plan is already on to go on Sunday (9th). So far, it's just me with my Willys and Emmanuel with his gypsy.

Anyone else coming, please PM me.

Cheers!

Ok, so 99.99%, myself, rohan & dwaraka will be going here this Sunday EARLY morning.

Those who want to join in are welcome to do so. I would suggest that people with Safari/Scorpio 4x4 should also come here. It's looks very nice place to test out your machines in a very non-damaging terrain.
Maybe even folks with SUV's (4x2 Safari/Scorpios can come here). It's very near to city so should not be an issue

@Rohan: Why don't you post the meeting place/venue time etc for this here?

Sha,

The recce turned out to be a real off roading. Good terrain. If it rains this will be virtually challenging.

Photos and story will follow. Rohan Arthur, great find.

Recce turned into OTR. Adrenaline pumped up action by 4 gypsies and one jeep.

Cheers

Here's a report.

For once, I reached the rendezvous before the appointed time. In my Willys, of course. I had along with me my friends Moiz (who has now become a regular on our outings) and Arjun (his first off-road). We were supposed to meet at 7AM outside the Total mall on Sarjapur road.

True to form, Dwarak soon trundles in with his brown Gypsy. He is accompanied by Sunil. They are soon followed by Raj and Ajit in Raj's nice green hard-top Gypsy. Since I had got a late night confirmation from Emmanuel, we knew to wait for him, and sure enough he too arrived before long in his white Gypsy King with the 'Warn' stickers.

We were off. While we were having breakfast at a little idli-vada joint called Priyadarshini on Sarjapur Road, we were joined by the Spider, driven by none other than the Spiderman (khan_sultan, Shahnawaz). A quick breakfast, then we were on the road again.

We reached the Bidaraguppe Lake Bed soon enough. All the people with hub locks got busy,

while I was busy posing for photographs taken on Arjun's Canon 450D
Attachment 172633

The lake bed itself is a large expanse of green pasture, broken in several places by ravines or ditches, which are both natural and man-made. We started off. The surface was mostly short grass, on soft black soil. No rocks anywhere in sight. Sure, there were little ponds of water to make things more interesting.

Just to get a feel of things, we found a nice spot to enter the lake bed. Here you will see Dwarak, followed by me, then Raj, Emmanuel and finally khan's Spidey.

Dwarak zeroed in on the first obstacle. This was like a steep twenty foot decline, then a jeep-length pond, followed by another fifteen foot incline. So Sunil was first to go, in Dwarak's Gypsy. As soon as the vehicle entered the pond, it just sank! The pond was just thick clay, and before long, the front wheels were almost submerged, and the rear wheels were banked with hard earth behind them. Here are a few pics:

the Gypsy was inextricably stuck. Time for me to put Ol' Rumbler to work. We tried towing from different angles, but things weren't really working.

Finally Emmanuel remembered that he had his high-lift jack. Once that was applied, it was a cake-walk.

After this, we just went out to play in the various ditches. Here are some pictures. Please notice the villagers looking on, and some of them even joining in the fun. This is the first time in my experience that no one came and started throwing his weight around, or started voicing concerns about non-existent cultivated saplings.

There are many many more pictures. Here are a few more that were taken by arjun on his Canon:

After this, we went and scoped out a little further in the trail. This leads us to a forest, and the terrain there is also quite promising, if not even more challenging.

I think everyone's vehicle (except Spidey) came away with some minor injuries, but we all had a whale of a time.

As I said earlier, in my opinion, this is ideal ground for training newbies. Also, if it rains, this will be a completely different ballgame!!

Thanks, everyone who came along. I had a great time.

This is my first weak attempt at covering an event, so please give me feedback about how I can do this better. Of course, I can only aspire to come close to an MJothi or a Samurai, and I have a long way to go!!

One more thing I forgot to mention: My jeep's tailgate is cracked, the rear indicator is broken, the rear shaft had broken (but I already got this fixed), the rear right wheel is oozing brake fluid. Lots of small casualties.

There were others too, who had their bumpers ripped away or dented. And one of us also lost his vehicle's radiator fan. I hope all your vehicles are back and kicking now.

Overall, I am quite satisfied with the outing. I cannot wait for the next time.

@jeep gurus: please let's go somewhere this weekend, because next weekend I am leaving for Ladakh for a long vacation!

@dwaraka:Thanks!! Some of the pictures in my post are clicked by you!
