Default Recce#2-3 Part2

Hi Guys,

The Sun wasn't a scorcher. The real scorcher were the Gypsy's with Maxxis Trepadors.

They were Brilliant on the Climbs, but a few aggressive wheel spins and .

Arka

Default Tyre Pressure

Hi Spike,

On Road I run 35 Psi with 7.50X16 and 30 Psi with 7.00X16.

Off-Road I deflate them to a pre-set 15 psi with Staun Deflators, as I run Auto-Lockers on the Rear Axle.

If there is a difference of more then 2-4 psi between Rear Tyres the Lockers act up (Lock/Unlock frequently).

This recce I forgot to carry the Staun Deflators so I was experimenting with 35 Psi.

Regards,

Arka

Strangely, I felt the Maxxis was more effective on the jeeps than on the Gypsies. Yes they did provide improvement, however relative to the jeeps i felt they were less than 50%. Maybe due to the weight of the gypsy? Vikram would like to hear your thoughts on this.

Bala, check my post #145

How and why do you say they were more effective on jeeps ?

He tries in 1L, 2L, with engine revving high, but still is not able to do it. The vehicle almost makes it to the top, but it doesnt clear it. Driver 2 is standing nearby and watching all this.

Driver 1 : "This vehicle does not have enough power, if it had more power, i would be able to clear it in one attempt".

Driver 2 : "Shall I try it?"

Driver 1 : "Ok, if you want to ...but the power is not enough, i dont think you will be able to clear it either"

Driver 2 : "Let's see..."

Driver 1 hands over the key, and stands aside as Driver 2 gets in position for the climb. He revs the engine, accelerates fast and the vehicle clears the climb in the first attempt.

Driver 1 :

The above incident clearly demonstrates that driving technique is very important in off-roading.

It can overcome the shortcomings of lack-of-power in difficult situations also

.
Well i dont think that is exactly correct, try doing it in an Alto!

Some vehicles are better than others and some drivers are better than others too! So it goes both ways, as far as my experience goes I have had gypsies since the 90s and i know its better on sand and the gurkha is heavier. Similarly I am sure some one new with the Gurkha will get stuck far more times in it than i do and i haven't gotten stuck much.

The answer is the Co Effecient of friction.

If you were using the same size tires on the jeep and gypsy say a 31x10.5x15 size tire, the jeep would have more traction than the lighter gypsy. The more weight on the tire the more traction it will have.

Ofcourse the surface also matters,in sand you dont have much traction hence you want to float the vehicle as more weight pushing down on the tire will just push the tire depeer in the sand....so a wider than stock deflated tire will have a larger surface area and driving becomes easier, the main reason a gypsy is better in sand than the jeep.
