Default Report & Pics: Feb 2010 - Offroading at Stone Quarry (Bombay)

Another satisfying sunday!

Date: 21st February 2010
Time: 7:30am to 10:30am

Participants:
Crazy4Power (Alok) - Gypsy
Danny - Gypsy
Danny's Friend (sorry i keep forgetting your name) - Gypsy
Imran - Gypsy
Tejas - Classic

Mohan wanted to come but couldn't make it so early.

Venue: Stone Quarry just 4kms off the JNPT road turning from Palm Beach Road (New Bombay)

Type of terrain: Mostly stony, with areas of dry river beds and a few stone faced inclines.

Pros:
- very close to bombay. Ideal for a short quick OTR
- very large area (lots more to explore yet)
- extremely helpful and enthusiastic locals

Cons:
- 60% of the terrain is too rocky with large boulders and sharp edged stones. These need to be individually picked up and thrown out of the path.
- dusty terrain (con from my side - open jeep)

Special thanks: Mr. Manjeet. He has been organizing a scooter rally in this area for the last 6 years. He and Danny explorered the area a day before and saved us time!

Report:

We reached our designated meeting spot on time (for a change); although i did get stuck in traffic at 6:30 in the morning due to diversions for the cycle race that was going to happen. Luckily, they thought i was one of the organizers in the cycle race and let me pass through most of the official no drive areas including the sea link.

At the meeting point we met up with 10-15 superbikes going on their way to lonavla for a drive. Great fun checking the bikes out.

Proceed to the quarry, and thanks to the heads-up by danny, i had carried a mask due to the highly dusty approach roads.

Initially we did go up a couple of dead ends leading to vertical drops and had to make U-turns in very narrow confines.

Also, there were quite a few very ideal inclines but the boulders were not allowing adequate run up space to attempt them.

We finally reached a dry river bed and scouted around. Did a couple of descents and climbs of the river embankments. The river bed was very very dry and flaky and no one sank in.

By that time a local had come (saying he saw the cars, assume a film shoot was going to happen, so he asked for a leave from his quarrying job for the day to come see us). He was most helpful and helped move rocks and stones.

He knew another place and took us there. We did another small hill descent and a technical trail crossing.

With everyone being on a tight schedule, we decided to pack up for the day. The local promised us to scout for more terrains and we have decided to go back on next sunday again.

Casualties:
- Danny's Gypsy's rear number plate bent and one mud flap detached
- My classic's idler pulley getting loose

Pics and more details coming up....

It was a nice foggy day!

Sunday seems to have been quite the motoring day:

- Delhi Supercar show
- Khopoli Automission Track Preview
- Bombay Superbike drive to lonavla
- Cycle race (Bombay)

Just struck me - in the recent blore OTR Arka was shouting out to some one who was doing the above (abridged version)- 'Next time lets bring 2 JCB's and 1 tipper and clear the path. Guys - just ignore them and clear them with your jeep, not arms'.

Of course all around had a good laugh!!

LOL. I remember. But, these were extremely sharp stones scattered everywhere due to blasting. No way to avoid them.

@Danny and Alok, awaiting pics from your side.
