Downhill to farm house.
Munnar Monsoon Magic! Updated!-mmm182.jpg

Quickly gather everyone and we need to get down asap, breakfast, small rest if possible and hit the next trail. On the way we need to rescue Sidhus gypsy which was parked as well as the broken down low bonnet.

Gypsy recovered and then we proceed, only to realize that the rain and vehicle movement has made the track dangerously close to vehicle breaker. Watch the way in which the wheels are articulating, will give you an idea of how messy it was. Worst is even with crawling it was slipping most of the time, almost all the vehicles. We had to stop and let the vehicle in front cover one section before letting the next, it was so slippery

Final slippery decent, reaching the end of trail 1!! Its like chocolate, covers the tires and rolls the vehicle down without any wheel rotation. Jayesh later told us, one needs to gas down and keep the momentum in the right direction to go down. Only issue in a convoy and first time on the trail highly impossible he he

End of the trail 1 cont, vehicles had a tough time. As i mentioned previously crawl on engine brake is a tricky affair on this trail. Vehicle has a tendency to slip rather than crawling. Viji was running full air pressure on those sandgrips and it was scary and entertaining to watch him go zig zag downwards.

Even Khan had tough time managing slipping spidey IIRC.

So that was end of trail 1, we headed back to the camp. Had some hot break fast and finally attended to nature calls etc. We decided to now go on another trail which can be done by all the vehicles. Since we had a later lunch and wanted to save time, we decided to pack the lunch.

The entry to the second trail.

Viji's vehicle now runs on deflated sandgrips and look at the difference it makes.
Munnar Monsoon Magic! Updated!-mmm274.jpg

Next is low bonnet from Kerala that belongs to Satheesh, tyres are an issue and he retains them to save the axles Even after climbing he has a hard time finding traction on the slippery grass.

Next is Rajesh with locker's in his 540. He also had to try couple of times, did a fair amount of dancing inside the stream area to place the vehicle at the right angle before climbing out. At one point of time I even thought we will have to drop this obstacle and find an alternate approach.

The exact location of the trail itself, I would also like to know where it is. But if you are asking where Munnar is, it is on the Kerala/Tamilnadu border on the Kerala side, reachable from Madurai and Cochin (Ernakulam), 600kms from Chennai by road. Marked by the red A, in the below map :

The convoy movement was shortlived and we find Sidhu going sideways into a ravine. He was avoiding a rock and vehicle slipped. The vegetation on the side was quite deceiving that way. Vehicle has winch and we winch him out, Sree carries the tree saver and winch rope up the slopes and after few minutes of winch vehicle is recovered. Could have been dicey without a winch

We had a fun time over lunch and decided to return, this time through an alternate route, which is shorter but has two tricky sections. The convoy was led by Benji who crossed, Sree's 550 got royally stuck, after lot of circus was brought down. Rajesh went next and again got stuck and even lost some parts. Sunlight was failing and we decided we will return back the original track and try getting some much needed rest. U

I was nursing a cinus and didnt capture much of the circus, but you can see that in later pages.

So finally Robi and us reach the valley and we wait for the convoy, who were moving really slow. Then it struck us that, if they take the rock phase it can be quite risky, but then there is no way to communicate to them. So we honk and hop, lucky for us Benji was with them and took the lead in between.

Finally the emerge out.

We move on to basecamp and myself and khan try to take a small snap before dinner. Only to be waken up by parrots who wants to drive to Camp Noel which is about 10 kms on a mud trail, or 50 kms by tarmac. No prize for guessing which one we took. Benji had warned us its mother of all dirt tracks, but then he didnt factor in the rains that happened for 24 plus hours.

Prabhu had given his jeep for some much needed work during the day, cross member had fallen off, diesel was leaking etc. One team went to collect the jeep and got lost but thanks to the walkie talkie's could regroup. Then we started the trail, at first it was ok, newly laid mud road, soft slippery slush, doable. But then it became more soft and more deep!! Vehicles were almost getting beached at some points.

Then it had to happen, mennace started to sputter!! Out comes tow rope and Robi is the bakra He tows for a km or so before he gets stuck lol

Munnar Monsoon Magic! Updated!-mmm375.jpg
Munnar Monsoon Magic! Updated!-mmm376.jpg
Munnar Monsoon Magic! Updated!-mmm377.jpg

We move on for few 100 mts and are greeted by a super soft slush, with a 90 deg left hander at about 40 deg. Sidhu being the wise one, blasted off after 2-3 run ups, to clear the section before other butchered it. Ofcourse he uses those 21 year old MRF to get this special privilege every time.

Next is Robi who also manages to somehow climb, Prabhu has fixed the sputtering, which was nothing but a pinched fuel pipe. He tries one, then twice and this becomes some 5-6 tries. End result he has beached himself and dug up the whole incline.

Viji steps in for recovery, and gets stuck soon.

I drive spidey and climb up, plan is to attach the winch rope to spidey and pull one jeep out which in turn will help the rest. Viji's winch wire is stuck and i have to reverse back in slush, attach the cable and then use spidey to pull out the cable. Had a tough time doing this, but after about 10 mts parked Spidey in relatively safe spot.

On the winch and spidey goes sideays lol but a very slow winch later, Viji jeep is out. I move on park in front along with Robi.

What happened next is it took about 2 hours plus for 4 vehicles to climb up and then convoy reached camp noel well after midnight. Benji had informed the camp for food and they had hot water, which saved the day for us.

We all crashed for a very early start, which happened at 12.30 noon!

Thats it folks from my side, but story doesn't end here lol

This location is part of Munnar. About 42 kms from Munnar town towards top station, place called Koviloor village passing through Vattavada.
This stretch is the 2nd highest motor able peak after Himalayas around 8000 feet above sea level.

Thanks for the info, robinson.s !

So, this comes after TopStation, right? Is this on the Munnar-Kodaikanal road (which is not fully navigable) ?

+1 to that! Siddu is too secretive...he just acts like a good friend, but he will ditch you later.

Advice everyone to be careful in their interactions with Siddu.

@redliner - am gonna have to report your post to the mods as a personal attack on me. you deserve to be banned or atleast an infraction.

khan/jaggu please do the needful!

@raj.barcode- so sorry buddy , i was threstend by the others that i will not be allowed on the trip if i opened my mouth abt it.

anyway , i would like to thank jack33 and robinson for showing us around and giving us an awesome time.

robinson has such immense enthusiasm and energy for offroading, and he really kept us motivated and pepped up all the time.

It was a treat to watch jack33 drive his mm540 to the limit on wet tarmac on skinny ndms tyres.
