I have sourced a Kirloskar Cummins 4BT engine and gearbox combo from a Nissan one tonne from Ahmedabad. Can anyone tell me whether the gearbox is a 5 speed or a 4 speed. From the way it slots and from the gear knob, it appears to be a 5+1 gearbox.
The specs say 105bhp at 2800 rpm. The pump is a Motorpal inline unit, which are suppposed to be very, very good.
Any info on pumping the engine to about 150bhp would be appreciated.

Hi Beboy,

Looks like the diesel Nissan 4W73 uses the same Petrol Bell-Housing and 4+1 Speed Gearbox.

Do post comparative pics. Also fit the PTO and check for clearance.

Regards,

Arka

Arka, I had to remove the gearbox from the bell jousing first, then the cover assembly and clutch and then the flywheel before I could remove the Bell housing from the engine. Is it the same on the petrol engine?
The gear shift on the knob is as in the picture. Do you think the gearbox could be a 5+1one? Ever hear of a one ton with a 5 forward speeder?
Do you think I should use my gearbox with the PTO or use my PTO on this gearbox. Are the ratios different on the diesel gearbox?

Civilian Versions of Jonga, had a 5+1 box with Hino diesels as option, so they may have used the similar on the 1 ton with Cummins too. VFJ had plans to launch the shaktiman in civil market with similar engine and gear box combo.

My engine has been overhauled with new liners and rings.
I sourced a 6BT exhaust manifold and got it cut to fit the 4BT with a larger turbo again from the 6BT. I got a Holset turbo from an AMW 6BT engine, along with the ac bracket and pulley.
I also sourced the newer 6BT oil filter assembly along with the oil cooler.
I am wondering whether i should just add the air compressor from the 6BT also.
Pictures coming soon.

The 6BT manifold with 2 cylinder exhausts lopped off.

Some pics of the overhauled engine. Useful for anyone interested in a 4BT.
The original Turbo is a Holset HX25. I Have replaced it with a HX35.
I have also increased the Motorpal pump rev limit to 3600 rpm.
The 4BT should approximately make about 130 bhp and 30 Kgm torque now.

John,

Your collection of mad machines is very inspiring. Anything else that we don't know about? Do you have a normal vehicle in the house or are all of them such monsters? I am very curious.

Cheers,
Adi

I have seen quite a few of them restored as commercial vehicles in Rewa and Allahabad carrying bricks and Sand. Wonder if there are enough spare parts available. Must be there in Allahabad.
