Default CJ3B Hurricane engine queries (engine oil etc.)

Wonder what engine oil the experts are using in their CJ3B hurricane engines in India. The recommended SAE 30 is no longer available. The manual does mention SAE 10W-30.

Behram Dhabhar mentioned SAE20W40 in an old post..
Quote:
the workshop manual specifies SAE30 engine oil for temperature above 0 degrees C. However, getting mono grade oil will be difficult now, so SAE20W40 should suffice. Intake and exhaust valve clearances with cold engine are correct as mentioned.

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar

20W40 is a standard fare - You could go for it!

It is a very subjective matter and it totally depends on how old or how the engine condition is.

A mineral oil of SAE 10W30 is usually used in Motorcycles of API either SJ or SL grade. Whereas, for Passenger Cars this oil grade is usually available in either Semi Synthetic or Fully Synthetic which will be way costlier.

A Multigrade 20W40 (having an API Spec of CF-4) shall do a fair job complimenting the engine.

Servo 20W-40. Tried and tested and not expensive
Dont try synthetic etc. Just keep topping up as the engine grinds.

And if you have found a source for the paper oil filter do let us know!

Why only a SERVO 20W40 and not a MAK 20W40 ??

Or for that matter if the Engine is consuming engine oil and requires frequent top ups, then why not Monograde Heavy Duty 40 (which meets Mack T7 or T8A Specs) and also comes cheaper than a Multigrade 20W40 ....

By the way how many litres of Oil is required in the CJ3B Hurricane ?

Am speaking from practical experience of what works for my cj. The engines are old and rugged so any easily available brand will do including in a remote area. That is the answer to the why/why not question.

Dear Sat - hello to you. SAE20W40 is OK. Please do not use synthetic oil. Buy from petrol pump only, chance of adulteration is less.

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar

Just a further suggestion -

Another viable option that can be looked into by you is HP Laal Ghoda which is also a 20W40 Grade Oil. Benefits are as under :
  • Easy to find at the most remotest of areas as well as this oil is also used in 3.5HP/ 5HP Agricultural Pumpsets and even in the Motorized Vans which have the China Engine fitted in them
  • Will be readily available at Petrol Pumps as well as Local Retail Outlets anywhere
  • A cheaper buy in comparison to SERVO or MAK
  • Tested product and a known brand for the masses

Laal Ghoda is a diesel engine oil.
Servo is both petrol and diesel compatible.
Your experience may vary.

I think 4.4 Litres is the engine oil capacity of the CJ3B Hurricane engine.

Spoke to a Jeep restorer in Jaipur who has repaired/restored a lot of old jeeps. He also recommended Servo SAE 20W-40.

Have gone ahead and purchased Servo 20W40 from a petrol pump.

Default Which thermostat for Cj3b hurricane engine. 76C or 90C?

Which thermostat would the guru's recommend for Cj3b hurricane engine. 76C or 90C version?

Currently do not have a thermostat in the hurricane engine, with the cold temperatures in Rajasthan the thermostat should help the engine get to optimum operating temperature quickly.

Would any one know of a source for quality thermostat for cj3b? Which brand?

Do you all think it's a good idea to create a page on team bhp with contact details of spare parts manufacturers and stockist for petrol Jeep
