Exterior roll cage for a 4x4

hi guys,

1. just wondering if a similar roll cage can be built around a MM or Gypsy?

2. is this kind of roll cage better than a roll cage on the inside of the vehicle?

3. any benefits or disadvantages of this kind of roll cage compared to the roll cage on the inside?

This looks like something done to handle the power of the artillery on the machine than an actual roll cage itself. Probably to handle the force of a recoil. Not sure though, so brickbats please

Nice topic there Parm. Yes this type of exo-skeleton roll cage can be designed and fabricated for MM or Gypsy. I am sure Mandeep will love to put his thoughts here. He gave me this idea long back and we have discussed about possibility of doing this kind of stuffs; he has designed couple of these for incorporating in our jeeps in future.

The outside roll cage is quite popular amongst hardcore off-roaders abroad. I guess they make it on the outside to protect the vehicle - passengers and engine mechanics.

This is what I have understood from the various sites visited, I may be wrong.

A simple tubular bar on top should be enought unless you are into hard core high speed Baja rally type stuff.

Of course it can be done. Both internal and external. All it needs is a design to suit the vehicle in question and a good fabricator. I have seen hundreds of roll cages on Jeeps.

For a Gypsy its even easier. The hood rods need to be replaced with permanently welded thicker grades of MS tube and one tube goes on top of the cabin.

If you are in Dubai have a look at any Desert Safari landcruiser. Internal roll cages are mandatory on them now. For more information on internal / external roll cages visit Robbies Motorsports near Times Square mall in Al Qouz. Have a look at Cazzas Jeep Wrangler which is usually in for repairs there. It has the most competent roll cage as can be.

it just carries a .50 cal machine gun and not arty!

i think this kind of roll cage is only for hardcore offroading and not needed for soft off road we do in india.

yeah robbies is a nice place to get it all for fabrication on the 4x4s specially wranglers.

hi parm,
yes it can be done.
but it will be heavy (also more safe), also it will increase center of gravity of the vehicle.

i am planning to do the same to my jeep when i will start the project.

I think a roll cage (atleast 6 point) is very essential. My classic has just a single roll bar and i think it is not adequate.

Ideal would be to weld a roll cage and be done with it but i kinda like the looks of the car and want to fabricate an external roll cage which can be a simple bolt on and can be removed and dismantled when not OTRing.

I need to know the following:

- What is the min and ideal diameter pipes to be used?

- What is the gauge of the pipe (min and ideal)?

- At what points of the body can the cage be bolted on?

- Should those parts of the body be strengthened and how?

- I don't have a garage to store this, so i need to make the cage out of bars which will bolt on to right angle elbow bends. Is it ok to do so strengthwise?

- How do i connect it with the existing roll bar in the center?

- Any suggestions on design for the classic? I have gone through enough pics on the web, so please don't cross post in general.
