Default Winch- Is this doable?

My friend chanced upon this winch in a ship. The wreck will be sold off soon for scrap. The motor is in working condition and supports both the winches.
The cables are intact. I was wondering if I would be able to dismantle the motor and separate the winch and mount it on my Jeep with or without the motor, or rather can it be put to any use?
Kindly bear with the quality of the picture.

Hey Beejay
That winch looks huge and heavy.
AFAIK the weight of the winch would make your front end drop.
Check on the weight of the winch before you buy it.

Cheers

@GB is right,it looks very heavy and i doubt it will have a 12V motor. Is it currently installed on some ferry?

The whole set would definitely be heavy. Was considering dismantling the winch from the motor and fitting on only the cable roll with a possible motor.

Does this make sense?

Yes, the same is fit on a ship.

@beejay,

Yes you can make a custom winch, by getting that winch without a motor and get a 12 volt motor elsewhere to fit with this one but it will look ugly and it will be a "Jugaad"(very unreliable).
Also without motor it won't make any sense on the jeep, that can not be used for anything except as a tow rope.

The weight of the whole unit would be more than 100kgs for sure, the cable roll alone would not be that heavy.

How heavy are the normal winches?

Pic is misleading BJ. the no smoking signs in a ship are usually 20-30 meters across!!

What are the dimensions of this winch and how much power it needs. you will be better off without it. Especially the 100Kg part, Ramsey's are under 60Kg, check with Siva trammway he's got one.

The ramsey works out lesser than 35K for sure. 100KG is much heavier for a jeep even for a truck, I don't suggest it.

Dude settle with a Jeep winch not the ones on the ship, they are way bigger to handle.

I remember the power to weight ratio now.

100 Kgs was just an assumption. However I am sure the cable roll will be less than 35 kg. I am not too keen on getting the same either. The stupid side of me gets better by the day and was just considering.

That looks at least 500 Kg

Just look at the size of the windows in relation to the winch. This winch is huge. You'll need a truck to transport it.

You can try some yatch or fishing boat winches. They may fit.

The Smitty Bilt XRC8 8000lb winch with 100 ft steel cable weighs 62 kgs. I know this since the UPS guy who brought it from the truck to my house looked quite pissed. I had ordered four of them ;-).

You could take the spool and cable off one side and save it for spares. Hard to tell how big this thing really is from the picture.

My observation is this winch being on ship is an AC current driven. Not DC . Hence, fitting on jeep / vehicle is out of question

Like everyone has stated so far .. looks like this will be a case of trying to buy the Pork in the Pig. IMHO this would not be a neat and tidy solution.

Please look at attached site for a "Winch", this guy is quite near to where I live, am happy to talk to him and get more details.

since it is a piece of old marine equipment, be prepared to deal with a lot of rust and heavy-duty corrosion (due to continuous salty air impact).
