i am a big fan of jeeps so acquired one, now wish to sharpen my skills on my favourite 4 wheels.

so here are the starting questions.

1. my jeep stalls on the mechanical pump in about 30 kms, then i have to shift to the elec pump...reasons???

2. what is difference between piston ring job and overhauling the engine?

3. my jeep doesnt have a hand brake, does it work ina jeep? should i be haviong it? what is the approx cost involved?

4. why do i have to press the accelator pedal and start the jeep , it doesnt start without it?

5. the gear shift in reverse and 1st is much longer in comparison to the 3rd and 4th, is it normal?

6. how can i caliberate my speedometer , it shows excess speed kmph?

7. would front lambda hubs help in improving fe? and how?

8. how do i come to know that some thing is wrong with the carb?

9. are there any mechanical components we could get better in europe??(as i leave for a visit for there, and wanted to get a gift for my jeep ....)
Hi,
It has been long since this thread was first posted, and possibly you already got answers to your problems, but I will give a try to some of them, too.
1.The rubber diaphram of your fuel pump has some cracks and it becomes insufficent to feed gas at higher RPMs.Particularly when the temp. of the engine rises. If this occurs on curuising conditions you can pour down water or any cold liquid on the fuel pump to cool it down for emergency.
Also check the two bolts securing the pump to the engine block.
4. A healthy engine always needs choke for cold starts. The new generation of cars and vehicles have all automathic choke systems and the drivers are mostly unaware that the system is in operation.
As time passes by some wear and tear in the engine and engine components reduce the vaccum and compression. With the lack of choke system one has to feed rich gas(petrol) into the engine. This is often done by pumping the accelerator pedal.
Since you have to press the pedal all the way down then your carb is sending more gas but less air which floods the engine. You can overhaul the carb and replace some parts using a repair kit and readjust to the specifications.
6.During Willys and Kaiser eras some different axle and transmission ratios were used.Possibly your vehicle has low ratio axle( 1:5,38) and transmission but somehow installed high ratio(1:4.27) axle and transmission speedometer gear. Then you get higher speeds on your odometer. If you ever install low ratio speedometer gear on high ratio vehicles then you get lower speeds on the odometer.
These gears are interchangebable and can cause such problems.
8.Electronic test systems in some garages show if the carb is rich and flooding,or vice verce.

First of all flush it with peassurized water. Then drain the engine, transmission, transfercase and the axle oil and refill.Remove the all four wheels and clean the brake drums.Twice a year flush the front and rear axles with #10 oil.( Don't use diesel, petrol or kerosene)

hey seyit.
Thanks for the replies. The queries were very old, but additional explanantion always helps, specially novices like me. It would be great if u could go through the last few posts and give a possible explanation.

The temp guage change is pending yet, no time, new job.....
Well for the few people who read up this thread, i have recently joined AIIMS, in paediatric gastro and hepatology.

checked the temperature with manual gauge as well, stays between 80-100. no issues with timing, exhaust, compression, radiator, fan and shroud. what to check and do now?.
come up with some answers/possibilities everyone.
One odd thing i noticed that when the temp stays at sustained 100 for say an hour then the hose is completely compressed/collapsed. checked the small hole in the radiator cap as well.
Now what next?

Have you checked the thermostat?
1. It might be factory adjusted for higher degrees than your local avarage. (requires shifting to lower degree thermostats)
2.It might be well away from properly functioning.
In any case your problem sounds to be a thermostad problem.

Do you have a mosquito net grill by any chance, if so throw it out.
IF you temp is showing 100, then water will boil 100% and will come out of the outlet.I dont think you are running at 100 degrees.

After running at 100 c , stop the jeep and switch off the engine and notice any water coming out of the coolant bottle.

There are duplicate metal fans in the market, catch a blade and try twisting it , if its more flexible, then its duplicate.

Your 4 core radiator might be of an inferior quality. Get karnataka/andhra radiator.

There was a cj3b rebuilt recently , he had all the things in place , but was heating up , poor workmanship of mechanic while rebuilding the engine.

Once the temp touches 90/100 it will boil and coolant spills, it thats not the case your temp reading is wrong.

Why are south indian radiators better than north indian radiators?

@Frankestien- no water/coolant comes out. The radiator is a direct lift off from the CNG pikup, no local stuff in there.

I feel that the temp gauge i am using is the elec gauge and that too perhaps meant for the deisel motors, is whats the reason for a wrong reading.
Also maybe the fan and shroud could be the culprit.I will post pics of the fan setup.
I will remove the mosquito mesh and see as well.

@Genesis- I think its the radiator build not its region of origin

What is CNG pickup. If you are referring to the plastic radiator, some how i have seen it only works well with the peugo range of engines. IT is hopeless for the petrol and om616.Had that damn radiator and threw it out.

What is the distance between the radiator and engine fan, if its too much , engine heats.
I too think your temp reading is wrong, since water is not boiling , its confirmed now.

Mosquito mesh , remove that and you will see the JEEP running atleast 10 to 20 Degrees cooler.

The fan blades dont bend, distance i shall measure.
The radiator is a copper 4 core, good one.
MOsquite grill is off
As far as water not boiling, i dont know, all i found was that the water level doesnt decrease after even say 100kms , there are no leakages, and THE HOSE IS COLLAPSED WHEN THE JEEP IS ON IDLE AND HOT, when i press the accelarator the hose again becomes normal till the time i rev and then goes back to the collapsed state. This happens only when the temp shows >100 consistently for some time.

My 1.5 paisa on this. Bolero ones are the ones for this. Got to ask for 8.5 inches of traverse. Gurus may advise better.

Since I was asking around on this, got pointed to the following part numbers

Quote BD: "The shock absorber which comes nearest to your requirement is 079757 (rear) and 080166 (front)"

All questions for CJ 3B-rockcj3bv.jpg

The usual store in Mumbai is down to it last mismatched set.

Need help in procuring a set or two of the large round and the smaller conical ones.

All questions for CJ 3B-img2011101000427-copy.jpg

Dont want expensive imported ones since the jeep is used regularly for OTRs.

Any pointers from other cities appreciated
