Arrow Grading system during OTR competitions

Let's come to a consensus on different ways to grade participants during offroad competitions.

One way is the TPC way which everyone is familiar with.

However, sometimes, we hold smaller competitions were we do not have enough marshals and the terrain is not so long. What to do in such cases?

For example:

Let's say i'm holding a small OTR competition for only 15 cars and we have a total of 5 climbs, a few ruts, and a huge slush patch.

What i suggest is a time based rating system:

For obstacles:

There will be a starting point and end point including a run up area.
- Participants will be judged on the time taken to cross each obstacle
- Only three attempts will be given to a participant as soon as he crosses the start point. After this he will be towed out or asked to circumvent the obstacle. In such a case, 60 seconds will be added from his overall time.
- Participant will be allowed to walk the trail only once.

Negative Points:
- 30 seconds added if the marshall thinks the driver is driving in a reckless / unsafe manner
- 30 seconds added if participant is delibrately wasting time during his walk on the trail
- additional 30 seconds added if marshall calls any other foul. decision of the marshall final.

Slush:
Have timed slush runs with flags and the participants has to go around those. (like a motocross one). If they hit or miss a flag, 10 seconds added to the time.

The vehicle with the lowest time wins.

What say? Feedback please

Sounds fair but these are for professional, sponsored events where people are not afraid to damage their vehicles in order to get through an obstacle faster. The main reason why TPC regulations are made in this way is so that points are awarded for clearning obstacles "safely" and speed is not critical to success.

Flags are fine but here is what I am proposing:

1. We tackle the obstacle in a stock Gypsy and a stock SWB Jeep and measure the times.
2. These times become the "Par" for the course...just like golf.
3. Do the obstacle inside 10 seconds of Par and you get +1
4. Do the obstacle inside 10 and 30 seconds of Par and you get +2
5. Do the obstacle 10 seconds beyond Par and you get -1
6. Anything over that you get -2 and -3 for (10-30 and anything above)

Something along those lines...

Whaddya think?

How many offroading competitions are there? How many can we hold. For Eg: for EXAMM one or two events a year (competitive) should be enough, or will it? There is usually a skepticism involved with competition. For me (and strictly IMHO) i would not be interested in more than one or two competitive events a year. Which one will it be? The MGE, The EXAMM, the XYZ, and trust me the way offroading is growing, there are going to be many an offroading club soon.
I think if we at EXAMM keep our OTRs directed mainly towards a fun factor. Take Examm Lonavala/Mhape etc and the AKC. If these were competitive sport, i doubt we could find so many participants. OTR should be mainly for fun.

One would not find a lot of people helping you or advising you in a competition. For newbies and greenhorns it would not be the place to be as it could get dangerous without lack of inputs. Just my thought to restrict a competitive event to max one a year.

OTR Competition are better held on a field with man made obstacles.

Running a competition on a trail is crazy.

Default Competition

Hi Tejas,

A Few questions

1) Why a Competitive Event?

2) What Kind of Competitive Event? Individual or Team Based.?

3) What Type of Event - Trials or Expedition or Both

The Rules will follow based on the above factors.

Regards,

Arka

This is just a general thread on how one can rate / give points during obstacles which can be either during a trail or man made obstacles.

I'm right now trying to come to a consensus with respect to individual entries. Not team events.

The point is to make the OTR session a bit more interesting. Nothing dangerous.

Dear Friends

Our Club ( Islamabad Jeep Club ) is going to arrange an Offroading event in a couple of months time. Kindly suggest the point system for the event.
If u know any link for the reference, it will also help.

There r Three types of OFFROADING events

1: Obstacle & Hurdle with point system to judge the winners

2 : Obstacle & Hurdle with time trial & point System

3 : Obstacle & Hurdle with only Time trial

Kindly suggest point system to judge the winners of the event

Hi Aamir,

I would suggest

2) Obstacles & Hurdles with Point-System and Time Trials.

Give points for Obstacles, and the Team Which has fastest time trial a bonus of 100pts going down to 10pts or 1 point for the Slowest Team, depending on the number of vehicles.

The Advantage of a point based system is people are more cautious and less accidents, disadvantage is it takes too much time.

Hence the time trial has to be included to supplement the points system.

Regards,

Arka
