IMHO, I think its fair just to say that AC and Hard Top could be provided as "Options" just like the roll-over bar, bull bar etc. Those who need AC and HT can take it and the ones who don't need it can always opt out and save some bucks.

Very true, so that one with limited budget can go with bare jeep and then plan the items like AC, HT step by step as and when required.

Thanks,

Slightly , but we can draw conclusions of the 2012 Budget impact on Thar:

"The government has raised the excise duty on small cars by 2 percent to bring it to 12 percent. The exact definition of small cars is vehicles that are not more than 4m long and engine capacity under 1,200cc for petrol motors and 1,500cc among diesels.

An excise duty hike of 2 percent pushing the rate to 24 percent and a fixed duty of Rs.15,000 on cars which exceed a length of 4m and engine displacement above 1.4-litre (but less than 1.5-litre).
Cars with engine capacities above 1.5-litre have been slapped with an additional 3 percent ad valorem over the 24 percent hike to take the total to 27 percent. As for imported cars, the customs duty has been raised from 60 percent to 75 percent for vehicles worth (Rs 20 lakh) or more"

"Indian car maker Mahindra & Mahindra will be raising prices of all its vehicles ranging from Rs 6,000 to Rs. 30,000".

The article also provides the revised prices for few brands like Maruti, Toyota, Hyundai, Honda, Tata etc.

I agree most of them are more expensive than 8L... but they are worth it !

And the grow up part, is stretching it....
That is exactly why "SUV" were invented by manufacturers - tough enough for the outback and good enough for the club

I agree that if you have the climate and the wherewithal of owning multiple vehicles, a bare bones Thar would be the ideal specialist vehicle for your "off roading", but for enthusiast who are limited to one vehicle an AC+HT 4x4 Thar is the cheapest you can get here. Both Scorpio and Safari 4x4 are way too expensive (and heavy).

So its finally here however the original CRDe engine is replaced with mEagle, guru's can comment this is good or bad.

Even with its classic looks and an image that massages male ego like nothing else, the Thar does drop out of many potential customersí options list owing the lack of basic amenities like an AC. The vehicle, with its open top, is also prone to thefts unless parked at a secure location. A year after launching the hardcore open top compact mud-plugger, Mahindra is planning to launch the new, 2013 version of the car in the coming month. By April end we should see the emergence of a new, improved Thar with amenities such as an A/C, a hardtop to offer better protection from the elements, and an improved cabin.

The Thar is available with two engine options, a 2.5 liter DI turbo diesel and a more powerful and cleaner 2.5 liter mEagle diesel. From what we hear, itís going to be the more powerful 2.5 mEagle powered Thar, targeted at the urban audience which will get the update in April. Based on the response to the new machine, the company may introduce the changes on the DI version also at a later point. An increase of Rs 30,000 in the ex-showroom price of the vehicle is expected over the current version.
We are expecting the Thar to share some of the new bits inside its cabin with the Bolero. More details are expected to emerge in the coming days. Stay tuned for more dope on the topic.

From what I read in one of the previous posts, the current CRDe is actually a pro-tuned M-eagle. So where is the necessity of an engine replacement? Experts, please throw some light!

Also, I happen to speak to some sales guy from India Garage near palace grounds, Bangalore. He says, V2 will be launched by April end and will have some car-like features read as demister, AC and plush interiors. He also mentioned HT. Apparently, the HT will be the same one seen in the export vehicles.

Hi guys,
Requesting to please keep the expectations low. First of all this is not a V2 or a Thar refresh. We call it a Thar upgrade. Re-fresh models generally don't come wintin an year of launch as they are normally a 24 to 36 months project!

An attempt has been made to make the current Thar more userfriendly and most wanted feature airconditioning has been added as a standard feature along with heater. Immobilizer has been added for vehicle safety and peace of mind. Thereare other minor changes too which increases the practicality of the vehicle.

Even though high of wish list Hard top is NOT an option yet. We are looking for options.

Will give further details in few days time. For those who are interested and have been waiting for factory fitted A/C, can book it now.

Perfect,

I'm looking for somethng where we can add some more practicality and still keep the budget low, I guess something similar is what I can expect here.
frankly speaking, I had started considring LX 4wd and was just waiting to see which one makes more sense for my usage and vfm. I guess, I may still need to wait until it releases.
Thanks for taking all the feedback and acting on at least some of them. Do we have any additions on performance side!

Ketan, LX 4wd Scorpio is a good buy provided you have about 2 plus lakh more to shell out as it is about 9 lakh exshowroom! Thar now would be about 6.8 lakh exshowroom. (ex-showroom prices vary from state to state)

Would say purely depends on your budget. What Scorpio would bring is more comfort and what Thar would bring is more character/ individuality and off road capability.

Vinod, can an existing Thar with Mahindra supplied AC get a heater?

And what in my opinion is more important for an off roader, is that Thar has a mechanical 4x4 engagement while the other M&M vehicles have an electrical system, which has been prone to water damage.

So even at 1L extra for third party Hardtop and better seats, Thar is a better option for a "bare bones" 4x4, compared to a Scorpio LX 4x4.

I agree.

I guess, I should be able to stretch my budget, sell the old hatch and get the LX 4wd, in case if I go for Thar, I will have a mixed usage, daily drive + my adventure trips around and can keep the hatch for wife/family. Family is more inclined towards a bit comfortable vehicle and my mind keeps going Thar way. For now, I guess, I will just wait for launch and take a decission at that time, I heard about the refresh in Scorp as well, but I'm sure thats not going to happen so soon.

Mr. Nookala,

Frankly, I am relieved to know there would not be an engine replacement. More so in my case, as I had bought the Thar in December, I was dreading the news hovering around about the engine. Thanks a heap for throwing some light!

I just have a couple of questions to you if you could answer them. They may seem off-topic on this thread, but I am going ask you anyway.

1. Why is the dealership so ill/misinformed about a product like Thar? I remember talking to G3 Malad in Bombay and getting a response like "We don't deal with this vehicle!" They also don't service the Thar, but service the other vehicles from the Mahindra stable.

2. This one is the clincher. I also fail to understand why the service personnel at the ASCs (NBS-Reay Road or Farm and industrial ...Guwahati) have no inclination or knowledge of solving issues related to the Thar, are they not sufficiently trained to address issues?

Thanks.

trueintrepid,
2.5 NEF CRDe is my personal favourite. Have seen this engine performing high up on the mountains. This is a torque machine. May be few years down the line might have to migrate to M hawk due to emission norms and refinement levels. But for now present engine stays.

I am aware of people getting mis-information about Thar. Ideally this should not be the case. Thar is not the product that they sell on daily basis. May be this is the reason. Also an executive trained for few hours finds difficuilt to match the knowledge of an auto enthusiast who buys Thar. We are trying to infuse more quality. Atleast now hopefully they dont ask- sir, why do you need a 4wd?

Further inability to handle Thar service should not be a problem as most of the parts and systems are carry over from existing lineup. Hence if they can service them they should be able to service Thar. Purely depends on drive and motivation levels.

I don't intend to carry this forward, but it seems like they lack the drive and motivation, as you rightfully pointed out in ASCs across the country, the moment they have the Thar staring at them in the eye!

Having said that, the ASC in Udaipur is probably the only one that has highly motivated individuals. My friend has only good things to say about them. I hope they stay motivated in the presence of Thar as well
