JONGA !! Can i have some details about this monster truck - Page 2 - Team-BHP

On a trip to Darjeeling long ago, it was almost like heaven with Jongas and Land Rover Series 1 and series 2's tottling around. The fact that they were in the worst condition didnt put me off too much. After all, these cars are meant to be abused, and can take all that abuse.

i heard they are using ther body shops to make bodies on TATA and ASHLEY trucks.

Jonga was a veteran in the military transport system, But vehicles like these are better phased out than plying today...!

Jonga consumes clossal amount of fuel...! Shakitman was no exception..for a truck of that power....!

Today, We need to plan alternate means of energy not only for the Armoured Core but for civilan populations also...Save Petrol- explore alternate power sources as CNG-LPG-Jatropha Bio Diesal-Electricity..!

God Wish I really Hope One Day we can manage to develop something as powerful but much fuel efficient than Hummer which the US Army uses...!

Even the Gypsy is kind of getting phased out....these were couple of trucks which i always admired. Even the shaktiman was a gud sight to the eyes..

For about two decades: from the 1960s to the 1980s, four-wheel-drives were rugged, no-nonsense go-anywhere tin-toys.

After that marketing diluted-in imponderables like status, sex-appeal and created the image of a 4x4 as a style statement. The Sport-Utility-Vehicle (SUV) was born.

Suddenly style, air-conditioning, electronics and comfort overrode core off-road competence -- what the original vehicles did well.

In fact (with some honorable exceptions), most 4x4s or SUVs sold today put up woefully apologetic performance off the tarmac. They never get muddy and fear to get their beautiful paint-jobs and fancy graphics scratched.

The large majority of SUV owners didn't know nor care what a transfer case, or all those other gear levers were for. So, quite deservedly, two wheel drive station wagons and some fragile 4x4s were palmed off as SUVs (examples: Tata Sierra, Mahindra Scorpio, Tata Safari DICOR).
As if that weren't enough, a rash of cross-over products like the Ford Fusion and Honda CRV are here to sully the erstwhile turf of Jeeps, Land-Rovers, Unimogs and Nissan Patrols.

The Nissan Patrol G60 born in 1960 is one of the military-strength 4x4s.
One of the longest running production models in the world, the G60 series was produced in short, medium and long wheel-base versions. Like the Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser, it exploited the popularity of the Willys Jeep and the British Land Rover.

It was simple and tough. It had a 3-speed manual gearbox and 2-speed transfer case with part-time four wheel drive. The engine was a bullet-proof 4-litre straight six.

Though out of production since 1979, old G60s live forever. They are tough, capable off-roaders. I saw lots of them in Sydney, Australia, converted to V-8 petrol engines. The Aussis love'm, modify them and offroad them in the outback boonies!

Nice write up Ram. I agree about most "SUVs" nowadays being a joke, especially the Safari and Scorpio. Having driven a Gypsy King for almost 8 years, I remember looking at these overweight, lumbering, deilcate darlings and thinking, "pseudos!"

Yeah the yellow Jongas rocks !!. Ram whatu have said is absolutely right. I hardly find people taking their scorpios, Sierra's, Safari's etc ( the so called SUV's ) to any rugged terrain...they ride them only tru cities !!!! .
