JONGA !! Can i have some details about this monster truck

I don't know how many of us are aware of a jeep called as "JONGA". They were seen on indian roads long time back, but now they are almost phased out. I would like to know if any Bhpian owns one, if yes can u shed some light on it

I managed to get a pic of the Jonga.

jonga was manufactured by nissan and was sold to indian army and was not available in free market in india,it had a 6cylinder engine that had a reputation for being powerful but the vehicle was too thirsty.most jongas on indian roads arefrom army disposal and are retrofitted with diesel engines,jongas were very popular in rajasthan.

Well as far as I know VFJ did sell some jonga's to public, that was pre qualis era, when sumo was very new. The Jonga for civilians were, different from the military version, they had a very different body work, and were powered by a Leyland Hino engine.

I don't know if it will be possible to get any new jonga's from VFJ, even if you get, I don't think you will be able to register it in any metro, because of the tail pipe emmission rules.

But you can try your luck and try to contact here

Another way is to get a army decommissioned Jonga and modify it.
The 3.0 litres TATA DI engine seems to work like a dream in it.

I go to Deolali pretty often with my family. Got some friends in the army there. One senior tech within told me that Jongas can go places that Mahindras, Trax and Gypsies only dream about.

In 1960 NISSAN introduced their new 4x4 called the P60 i.e Patrol 60.
The vehicle was available in 2 Wheel Bases and 3 Body Types.

The P60 was inducted by the Indian Armed forces in 1963-64, along with the Nissan "CARRIER" aka D4W73 aka 1Ton.
Incidentally both vehicles were mounted with the same engine.

These vehicles were built by the Vehicle Factory Jabalpur.
Hence the P60 came to be known as the Jabalpur Ordanance aNd Guncarriage Assembly - JONGA.

The the engine was a 4L (3956cc) I-6 Petrol Engine.
Peak torque of 225-245ft/lbs @ 2000RPM (depending on production model)
BHP 110-145 (depending on production model)

It had a 3spd gearbox with 2 spd SOTF Transfer Case and a PTO.

Some JONGAs were equipped with a mechanical winch (PTO).

The earlier JONGA/P60 had HITACHI & carburettors and Keihin Distributors.

In 1996 the VFJ introduced the new 4.0L HINO diesel engine.

A total of 100 Diesel Jongas were sold to the civillians.

In 1999 the production of the JONGA stopped.

The JONGAs were used in the Indian Army in the following roles -
1) General Service
2) Ambulance - Hardtop with extended body behind the rear wheel.
3) RCL Gun Carriers
4) Recce & Support - Winch equipped.

Jonga's just like most of the other products (Nissan Power Van, Shaktiman) from VFJ were rough. They won't be the kind of thing you will care to drive in a suave urbane millieu. And yet when it comes to brute power nothing on roads ever came close to this. For example, are you guys aware that one of the regular test for Jongas (and shaktiman's) used to be be driving up a fully laden vehicle up a 45 degrees incline on 2n gear and then 3rd gear. Reach the top of the incline, brake and then stay there without sliding for 60 seconds.

cool got some great info abt the JONGA. Last time when i had gone to Yercadu in TN for a 2 day trip i did see a Jonga in one of the resort, but it just had the body, the engine was ripped out and it just had the shell. The looks were mind blowing !!

I grew up and spent all my schooling days in Jabalpur. Our school which was less than half a Km away from GCF ( Gun Carraige Factory ) was nestled in a valley surronded by hills on all sides. We use to see these Jongas & ShaktiMans drive out in a convoy once in way and the very sight of this would get us all excited. I have seen the jongas climb, effortlessly ,on these hills ,which were probably of about 45 degrees incline, if not more. These roads were so treacherous that we would all be dog tired after trekking on them. Only now I realise why they were kept in such conditions as these were their testing grounds.

Since my dad's in the army,i've had the oppurtunity to ride in this vehicle.Now I think its completely been phased out.The ones i had the misfortune to travel in, were rickety ol' things.We hated travelling in them.They had the tendency to breakdown every other day.But maybe thats because of the fact that they were quite old,and with new ones not being bought,the army was tryin to get as much usage from them as it cud.

I never have sat in a Jonga, but my "Captain" friend in army had a Jonga at his disposal. When he was posted at Dehu Road, he used to come over to meet us in that Jonga. Out of fun, we calculated how much does that 60-70 km trip cost to army? (Dehu Road -> Pune -> Dehu road). It turned out to be something like 750 Rs. Grrrrrrrr! What a colossal waste of money.
