Default Lock Right Installation Part1

Hi Guys,

I wanted to fit a Richmond Gear Power-Trax No-Slip for Dana 44 19 Spline (open Carrier) but that part was not available so, had to settle for the Lock-Right.

We decided to Install it in 2 Parts.

Part1 - Install in Dana 44 19spline open Diff-Carrier.
1) Cleaned the Diff-Carrier
2) mocked up all the parts to check for free play between 2 halves of the Locker Assembly (3.68mm to 4.38mm) to allow lock (straight line driving) and unlock (turns)
3) Suitably shimmed the side gears.
4) Applied a light file of grease on the components and fitted them in the carrier.

To be continued Part2 - Install in the vehicle.

Check this thread, apparently carbon fiber leafs make many magnitude of difference. https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/4x4-t...f-roading.html

Default Lock Right Installation Part2

Hi Guys,

Installed the Lock Right (part No. 2413) Last evening in the vehicle.

And drove her home. You can hear the Locker Lock and Un-Lock for, acceleration, deceleration, & turns.

Its quite a click, after a few Kms it quietens down. I guess needs some bedding in and lubrication.

On road, the Traction improves, there is a bit of under steer while turning but, that very manageable, barely noticeable.

hi Arka,
Very informative thread!

Some questions
1.Have you installed the lockers on both axles or just the rear?
2.And did you have to change your driving stlye?
3.I understand that it would have unlocked while taking a turn. But if you stamp down on the throttle midway while takin a turn, will the lockers lock up and try to push you straight ahead instead of following the front wheels?
4.Why were you not able to get No-Slips as you initially intended to? Out of stock or something?
5.I am assuming you got this imported. But is there somewhere in (preferably south) India that I can get something similar?
6.How much did the Lock Right cost? (all costs included)

Thanks
Have a great Build

Hi Omkar,
1) Only Rear Axle
2) Figuring out the Lockers behaviour, I think with the Low RPM diesels, the Lock and unlock becomes very frequent.
3) True Checked that out couple of times, the scary part is the clicking & Thrashing noise is makes if you power out of a turn.
4) No-Slip = No-Stock 3 months waiting AFAIK Dana 44 19 spline went out of style in USA in 1974.
5) & 6)I got it imported cost about 23K.

Regards,

Arka

Hi Arka,

Hmm.. the clicking and trashing sound is what I want to hear first hand. Will drive to Chennai for it once the jeep is ready.
Also curious about how the jeep will behave while powering out of a turn on a really wet road. Must be scary and awesome fun!!

Waiting for updates..

Thanks

Hi Omkar,

You are most welcome to drive it.

The updates.

1) The Locker is very sensitive to tyres pressure, both better have the Same Tyre Pressure. Otherwise there will be a lot of clicks & thrashing.

2) When tyres are properly inflated, the presence of the locker is hardly noticeable.

3) The trick is not to power out of a turn, but to coast into is with a steady foot and ease out after exiting the turn.
or
take the turn with the clutch depressed, but that way when you disengage and apply power the lockers -- LOCK UP .

4) Drove it in the rains, was not really a problem, the Indian Vehicle are pretty underpowered.

5) However I realized that the Lockers are ONLY as good as the tyres and mine are absolutely BALD, will have to get another set for Sand-Highway tyres ; before TPC2009 .

Regards,

Arka

Hi Guys,

The MM540XD has been upgraded in following departments.

1) Tyres - 150mm Re-Treads. Now the tyres are 31.5" tall and 4kgs heavier, but well balanced.

2) 4 Core Radiator - Tomorrow (the OEM Radiator has become weak, plus I wanted additional cooling, keeping the chennai weather in mind)

2) Snorkel - Powder Coating this week.

3) Seat Belts - Next Week

4) Paint Touch Up - Next Week.

The Re-Tread tyres have performed very well on road and on Sand.

Decent grip on gravel, however I intend to keep them as my road/sand set and get another set of MT tyres Mudzilla 31-11.50-16 or 7.50X16 NDMS.

After the re-tread and brand new tubes the Lockers are hardly noticed on road.

Off-Road you can feel the additional traction, but coupled with the front LSD, the steering is very hard.

Regards,

Arka
