How can Mahindra (S)UVs be called Jeeps? Surely that is politically incorrect for a forum like Team BHP.

Same here it cannot be said has a Jeep and be called has a Off Roader.

Jeep is a totally different Manufacturer or a Brand

Hi,

This is my CJ500DI 4X4. Didn't participate any OTR with her, expecting soon to do with bangalore jeepers. Need to change the tyres and looking for good one. The last one before the painting and modifications....

The Term JEEP and Willy's can be used for all Mahindra manufactured 4x4 vehicles under the license from the Willy's Overland Company. Technically and legally, that is the way.

I understand that in the 60's, the 3B's manufactured by Mahindra still bore the JEEP stamping on the side of the bonnet as opposed to the WILLY's stamping.

If you want to start getting extremely politically and legally right when on a forum like this, I think discussions will pretty much cease to exist!

It was only in 1995 that Jeep corporation stopped Mahindra from using the name CJ, that is pre-1995 Jeeps are known as CJ340/CJ500 and post 1995 are CL340/500. Since Mahindra used the same design over 50 years, they are still using it in MM550 and CL500 (Major).

Source Wikipedia -

Production of the Willys MB, better known as Jeep, began in 1941, shared between Willys, Ford and American Bantam which had initiated the original Jeep body design

Licenses to produce CJ-3Bs were issued to manufacturers in many different countries, and some (like Mahindra in India) continue to produce them in some form or another to this day.

The term JEEP was issued only for CJ3B's and not the other UV's produced by the Mahindra and i hope its clear by the information produced above and i do not want to open up a issue with the guys over here, it is just a thing which i think should not be infringed.

It's just a thought guys and chill...

Cool boss. Next time you see a MM540 or CL340, just refer to it as Mahindra UV, don't worry about odd looks you will get from people around you.

PS: Why do you call you bike as Suzuki Samurai, the only Samurai every made by Suzuki is a 4WD vehicle, a cousin of our Maruti Gypsy. People in glass houses...

I'm not trying to light any fire, sir. Just curious why being politically correct is applied very selectively.

Ah, you're coming in from the Jeep vs Gurkha thread eh? Heh heh heh.

I would be happy if Raghu lists out the Mahindra UV's that are NOT to be called as a Jeep. Lets hear it from the man himself.
