Hi,

A army 550 restored to OEM spec (Model year 1999 to 2002) should cost about 2.5 to 3 lakhs depending on whether it has AC, Power steering etc. Looking at the condition of this jeep and the fact it has PB registration shouldn't be more than 1.75 to 2 lakhs.

Since you are in chennai, please take it to Mohamad Ali and have it checked before buying it. Looks like there are some oil leaks in the engine bay.

As per my observation (an amateur) , outer body looked good no rust or damage visible to me.
It has geolander A/T tyres - 205/80 R16 and looked good for now.
It has A/c fitted but not sure about the working condition.
Snorkel is damaged and patched with tapes here and there.

Thanks 4x4addict,
Yes will talk to Ali tomorrow. It has AC (not sure the working condition), no power steering.

If you are going to be keeping in the farm with minimum usage, then gypsy will be much less maintenance and reliable than buying an old auctioned jeep.

Im not going to keep this in farm. It will be in chennai and i take to my farm whenever i go there.

Also interested in off-roading. After getting used to driving the jeep will go for OTRs in future. But first wants to buy a jeep and understand the technicalities and behaviour. Actually my village/farm has lot of scope to have fun with a 4x4.

Personally i prefer a diesel over petrol and i like MM rugged look over gypsy classy look.

I have seen this parked near HiTec accessories in Mahalingapuram for weeks on end.

Not a Jeep expert by any means but only suggestion I have is to be patient and look around till you get something in reasonable shape, at a reasonable price with all papers intact. If the papers are not proper - just walk away.

I bought a used Thar Crde and have been fairly happy with it. If you are able to get it registered outside Chennai city a new Thar Di may be all you need since you mentioned diesel - but like 4x4addict mentioned if it is occasional use then maybe a gypsy would be better suited.

Dear Kiranvakati - looks like somebody started an off-road project and now wants to get out of it. There will be some issue with the vehicle which you will not even be able to identify, let alone solve. Keep away.

Hi Kiran,

Pick up a JEEP registered ONLY in TN. For out of state vehicles you will have to spend another 20-40k for transport and re-registration.

The cream colour MM550XD is a PB47 registration.

Also keep an eye out for second hand Thar CRDe, if budget permits.

Regards,

Arka

Plus one, the vehicle appears to be wearing a proper makeup for sale.

Yet one of the under-body pics showing the D E N T S on the engine sump are gruesome reminders of some Kool n Hardcore " Offroading Stuff"

Plus one to this too. Me too have spent a sum of 20 K for just completion of paperwork (taxes included), for a outside state vehicle & the process is irritating . Same state vehicles will be reliable, paperwork wise & also less hassles. Please remember that my agent is a good guy, who does work for me for several years & has become like a friend, otherwise expect a " Ride ".

Regarding the suggestion to look for a used Thar CRDe, does not appear to be from Arka Ji , looks a typo to me.

DB sir has nicely worded my thoughts already.
I was also in dilemma for more than 3 years to get an army disposed MM550 and get it resorted as the Peugeot engines are fun to drive but finally ended up with Thar Di 4x4.

If a bad vehicle is occupied, every week end will be spent in understanding the technicalities at mechanicís workshop.
As you are already having duster, think about Thar Di 4x4.

Even i had reservations on PB registration, the agent(known to my uncle) suggested to get an R/C of scrapped jeep and register this vehicle using that R/c. I wanted to decide on that only after experts give their acceptance on the vehicle.

Im not interested in Thar. Budget is the primary reason.

Thanks for your valuable inputs. I could never see those issue. Will not go for the vehicle.

Budget is the primary reason for not going to Thar. Also my desire is towards old MMs, let me learn the hard way

These are the options i have at present:

1. Auction coming up next month on TN police jeeps. I can get one for cheap and also has the luxury to pick good vehicle(known source).
2. Friend of mine in bangalore can get me a MM international for cheap and suggesting to replace the engine with bolero engine, which he had done. He will help me out in doing that.
3. Get Ex-army MM550, thanks Arka for the contact details. I did spoke to him and he has 2 jeeps. I will be having a look at it tomorrow. He is quoting 3+ for finished one and 2+ for fresh out of auction vehicle.

My preference as of now is to get Police jeep and spent needed amount to fix engine and other under pinnings. Use it for a while before going for paint and other outer job.

Happy to hear your suggestions.

Thanks
Kiran

Smile Re: Jeeps/Gypsy's: All through Army Auctions: What, When, Where, How?

Hi,

Sorry for going off topic.
I saw this Gypsy King for sale in Kurla, Mumbai

It is a wide body Gypsy. The condition and body line looked pretty neat.
It looks like an Army auction vehicle. And is up for sale.

Interested people can ask for one Mr Bilal who runs his scrap business shop opposite Equinox Business Park on LBS Road, Kurla. Bilal's shop is one of the road facing one in the line of the bus stop.

I took his cell number but not sure if I can post it without his permission.

For the benefit of team-bhpians, I clicked a couple of pictures from my cellphone when I was passing by.

Strange that I had posted this lead earlier, but never got published. Must have been due to a technical glitch.

Has anyone else seen it too?
