Unknown 4x4 tractor in very sorry state

I pass this tractor seveal times a week parked in forest office compound, never gave a single thought about it.

This week i decided to dig in and click some images. To my surprise it was 4x4, with engine oil cooler etc. What a fine machine it have been when it was bought. Maybe imported.

I couldn't locate the model and make. Please help.

There are more if you look close enough. Both John deere and New holland have been producing big 4x4 tractors fro quite same time in India. Even HMT and Mahindra produce 4x4 tractors but they are mostly exported.

Looky its even got leaf suspension at the front, even though theres nothing at the rear. Now thats different, none of the other tractors have any suspension except in the seat, although some yrs ago i saw one export pupose HMT(at an agrotech in chandigarh) that had a 115hp motor,huge tires front and rear, and with 4x4, an enclosed cabin with an A/C, and it had road springs at all ends. Top speed was a good 70kmph.

during my work in india, i visited, New Holland in G noida, HMT in HP, SOnalika in hoshiarpur, Punjab tractors in Mohali, they all make 4x4s for export only. thats why i said, that its the first 4x4 i saw in india!

Yes your are right, because there are'nt too many people interested in those, but they are stil available, you just need to find the right links. There are a couple of 4x4 John deeres in malout, and Sunil Jakhar(the politician), has 3 4x4 New Hollands(at his farm on the abohar-ganganagar road), besides half a dozen Mitsubishi tractors. The Mitsubishi's are just a bit larger that a lawnmover, so small that he uses them in his Kinnu orchards, where a larger tractor will damage the harvest.

What type of work do they do with a 4x4 tractor ?

I have only ever seen the odd tractor stuck when preparing fields for paddy planting. Besides maybe military applications do these big monsters have much use ?

I think recently a few of the tractor majors in India have announced tractors with air conditioned cabs for the Indian market.

No one contemplated picking up one of these monsters for OTR meets ?

The problem is that in India, nobody thinks about buying them and the land holdings are not muck at all. Legally, you can have just 25-27 acres of land(maybe its a little more or less in other states, but still close). I would only consider an A/C tractor( or for that matter a tractor with any sort of road suspension) if i had atleast 500acres of land at one place together, and that too if i had to do everything myself. Here,the people rich enough dont want one since they have people to drive the tractors for them, and the other ones just cannot afford one.
Jakhar, on the other hand, has been rumored to have 3500 acres of land(poltics gets you loads of power), so it really does help. Also, its next to the punjab-pakistan border, where the soil is a lot more clayey, especially when its paddy season. Anything you put there will bog down , no matter what you do( during the '71 war. the major reason why pakistans strategy failed in punjab is that they attacked in the paddy season, and the marshy land took its toll. 70% of the Invading tanks bogged down, with its crew abandoning them, and as much 50% of them were captured without even a scratch on them. No wonder there are so many pattons used as war trophies in almost every major north indian city).
And the major reason why i think he uses them is that he lives in punjab, where flaunting is big business

the tractor looks american to me, might have been donated through UN to india in 1950-60s!

thats my guess depending upon its design and built quality

Ford maybe. It's a guess. There has to be some writing on it somewhere.

Seems like the rear wheels can have certain attachments bolted on to them.

Well, heres a guess. The tractor has a 60-80's look and seems it had a red colour before the rust took over. Now there are 2 tractors that have always been associated with that colour, and they are Belarus and International Harvesters(mahindra). Beside, on the right hand side of the gearbox it has a round indent, which is something i've seen only on the american Internationals, so there is a probabality it could be just that.
The indian Fords and Escorts do look kind of something like this, but in the ford, the front wheels are placed a little futher back towards the rear wheel, giving it a sort of front overhang, while this tractor has virtually no overhang. Besides the ford(3600) has only a 3 cylinder motor, and this one has a 4 banger, and neither had an oil cooler. As for american Fords(till the 80's),there were hardly 1 or 2 models (3600 again) that had a squarish look, the rest all had smooth round looks, and even the front grill was the wrap-around type(kind of like the Hindustan, Massey, or take the Belarus looks).
Anup, the side wheels also act as a PTO to drive farm equipment, especially while using a rotor wheel in irrigation canals( i am sure most ppl here have seen them) or with small disc contraptions that bite the ground along with the tire, while plowing a water logged field just before sowing paddy.

It does look a lot like a 1960-ish Mahindra but the fit and finish is too good...and springs???..... and there ought to be something leaking from somewhere if its M&M, sorry B.D. wherever you are. International? Hmmm....maybe. I do not think M&M knew what springs were in 1960, something in your ball point pen maybe. And, get back to your law books, Brutus! I can screw this up without your help, thank you very much! Sir Alec, look for an "I, H" superimposed on each other for "International Harvester".

If you look at the front tires one is Lugged and one is like the normal front used by 2WD tractors, the one lugged should be original - so if you can find out the make it will give you a clue for the make.

Also the Rear wheels look Russian to me. Lots of Russian tractors came into India during the 60's and 70's.

My Dad is in the Agricultural equipment business for over 40 years, so he should know. I will show this to him and let you know.
