I go with what ARKA says, MM knew what they were giving, threads here were to gain popularity & gauge market response.

MM should have discussed Thar on some
of their own platforms. Taking gullable offroaders for a ride is not a good thing.

Ramp over unlike approach and departure lesser is better if am not mistaken.

Something like this:

Ramp angle
A measure of vehicle under-belly clearance or the ability to drive over a sharp ridge or ramp without touching the underside of the vehicle on the obstacle. The ramp angle is the angle measured from the lowest part of the chassis at mid-wheelbase down to the periphery of front and rear wheels. Obviously a short wheelbase vehicle with large wheels will have the smallest ramp angle and best under-belly clearance.

Damn! You beat me to this, I was just about to post the same picture.

I have a doubt on the 15 deg claim.
Tata Xenon claims a 15deg rampover angle with 3150mm wheelbase and 200mm ground clearance. And Thar claims a 15deg rampover with 2430mm wheelbase and 200mm ground clearance.

Shouldnt Thar's rampover angle be higher?

Edit: or maybe lower and better as per Jaggu's post.

OT:

There was a *Mighty Muscular* Scorpio that took part in the Road & Track Munnar OTR. I talked to one of the organisers and he said that the Scorpio was able to keep up with the jeeps. Similar to the Bangalore jeeps the Bumper was removed and it was shod with Mudzilla tires.

ADC, all Mahindra Jeeps in the last few years come with disc brakes. Also, you can't have disc brakes without booster, unless you can stamp your foot like an elephant.

Rehaan's Scorpio with mudzillas could pretty much do anything in all the Karnataka OTRs, as long the automatic 4x4 kept working. Thar should do better.

Let's not worry about the rampover angle yet, I think it is a case of wrong data. My CJ340 has 33 degree rampover angle.

Anyways by the calculator i used it says close to 19 deg which might be theoretical (thar) and since in real life there is something protruding more than actual ground clearance at the center the angle is 15?

Where as the same calculator showed 15 for the Xenon, maybe it doesnt have anything hanging, maybe it has tall tires?

The 200mm GC mentioned is that of the diff housing (and hence not related to the ramp breakover), and not the horizontal pink line in the above figure.

I thought the angle would be lesser on a SWB and was surprised too see 19 on the calculator. I looked at the pics posted on page 2 and nothing seems to be lower than a Xenon. Ofcourse thats only a visual measurement and not actuals.

I am confused now - Is lesser the better?
Edit: Thanks BT, now there goes another question - what is the actual ground clearance on the Thar.

Edit2: OT, 200mm on Xenon is actually on the horizontal pink line.

No one is saying that, it just that unless M&M can give an option list [please check my list for some of them] that vehicle will get to most of the places on shear power and torque. but some situation the vehicle will need the addition of stuff, which is available for the 540/550 and gypsi.

Regarding Thar, we can't make any statements yet. Behram says it outdoes any Indian offroad machine. He knows Thar inside out and has more offroad experience than most of us. He was offroading when MGE was a real 4x4 event. The MGE went soft 2006 onwards.

So let's have some faith in our man and take his word for now. Gurkha has IFS, yet seems to do well.

I do trust the MAN, but looking at the specs, it's made for people who need a all round vehicle [like me] not an all out off roader like most thought.Than again the older M&M vehicle were great except for the low power engines.
The Gurkha comes with factory fitted equipment which is not in the spec sheet for the THAR.You know what I mean. Which M&M need to provide at least as option.
OK we should wait for the THAR to be launched and test it first.

No, lesser is not good. But to have a bigger reading, one will need to upsize the tire/increase suspension height for more ground clearance or shorter wheelbase.

@Experts: 20 plus is considered very good for 4x4's?

Dear Sharath,
Did you mean 23 here? For a 80" WB, to have a 33 degree rampover, the GC should be in the range of 280mm, isn't it? Does CJ have such a high GC or is it only with your vehicle?
