Dear Ken and all - A real 4WD guy worth his guts would never venture offroad without an LSD / MLD and a perfectly working winch. He will also have stout chains with shackles and / or snatch straps with him. Also, a real 4WD guy will never ever do impossible stunts just for the heck of it (I don't, I have learnt the hard way at the Great Escapes). Therefore, I know exactly what you guys want, AS I AM ONE OF YOU ONLY YAAR! What else can I do? Please try and understand. I have come upto here (Auto Expo etc). Still long way to go. No further comments.

Dear Sharath - in an after sales situation, full axle to full axle can be replaced. Guys know how to replace an axle. You don't have to touch the innards.

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar

(Simplest reason they stated is that the 4x4 are used for hill climbing and works better on hair pin bends, OMG you must know the shock I had as soon as I heard this)

India hosts the most IT skilled labours in the world, hence hosting your inventory into a online facility will greatly help many many of Mahindra Customers suffering from Scrap yard materials.

If I can only give you an example the most consumable part on Mahindra latest jeeps are the front and rear tail light assy, even though Lumax, Amber, Tristar and few other companies(OE Supply) produce these items we never get them on the local stores. I believe MM540, CL340DP, Classic, Major, CL550, CJ500D, CJ500DI are few of the Mahindra line jeeps used the same tail light assy but we could never get good quality stuffs. All such issues should be addressed to win the market share, else I'm sure Mahindra's effort in bringing the Thar too will face another Classic like story.
I fully agree with you and DD...

When I was searching for Glow Plugs for my Ex Army 550 , deler in Pune was completely unaware of the part no / availability or when to come info as well. Moreover they clearly stated that we have not ordered these plugs ever as they are made for only Army vehicles . I was continuously telling them look it is Ex Army Jeep but it is manufactured by M&M only. but alas... He said try and get in touch with other shops or straight from Army service stations as if they deal only in one vehicle i.e. Scorpio (Xylo was not launched that time) and Jeep is from out of the planet.

These words seem harsh but it is experience and reality.

This attitude should change

Any possibility of using the thar engine (if available) on our older jeeps (classic / mm5xx / etc) without major changes (ofcourse after suitably strengthening the chassis)

For starters, the engine gearbox combo is too long for the short chassis You will have to sit in the rear bench seat of the Classic to reach the gear lever then.

The engine and gear is too long for the classic chassis, this was the reason M&M never put the 5 speeder in the classic.
But 5XX,Major will be able to accept the combo, but will be too expansive and loos the VFM deal on building a JEEP from an old chassis.

I am going to assume that the Thar will have same rampover angle as MM540 until proven otherwise. And that is good enough for me. The Thar has same wheelbase as MM540.
Hi Samurai,

That is why I mentioned, there must be something wrong. Also, my signature indicates my current status.

This statement carries more hope. I am willing to wait for the outcome. I however would like to mention, that I would prefer LSD, PS and AC factory fitted. Winches, hard top etc., should be available as options from the factory and yes, the staff need to be trained to handle these complex 4x4s.

i think not all M&M dealerships across the nation will be selling THAR, when its launched.

there will be few select dealerships who's mechanics will be trained to service and take care of THAR.

for example, in delhi and NCR there might be only 2-3 dealerships selling and sevicing the THAR.

that will make sure the service quality, back up service and spares are maintained properly and specialised staff can handle the THAR.

this process might be done to put less constraint on the logistics of THAR and its A.S.S. and spare parts, and keep everything related to THAR under control.

Anything apart from the currenly released specs will be too much to expect. Let's first hope they will release what they have. LSD/AC exists as parts, so we can get it after delivery. Hard top is an issue, I agree. But rest of the things can be managed by the owners.

Since Thar is very similar to Scorpio, they may not have to do anything more. Considering Thar sales will be less than 0.1% of the total Mahindra sales, they won't do anything either.

Samurai- which export model are you talking about? And how do you know that a part number exists for LSD, i believe there is a MLD (manually locking differential) developed by Mahindra, would that be good enough?

Oh, even MLD would do, in fact it will be even better than LSD. How is it engaged, mechanical, electrical?

The rumour of LSD in Thar has been around for ages now. Since the Indian version doesn't have it, I figured it must be on the export model. If it is on some model, there has to be part number.

Actually, it is all crazy. See the photograph of Thar in the brochure for Europe: http://www.mahindrathar.com/thar_brochure.pdf

Thar in that image has full floating rear axle (FFRA), but the specs says semi-floating. May there is a LSD, and specs say nothing about it.

This is how Mahindra works. I asked for a spare water hose (lower one) for my CJ340, but the part shop at the local Mahindra workshop doesn't know which one to give. So they tell me, get the part number. Same goes for many parts I needed for the Jeep. I find the part number from Team-BHP, then the part shop gets me the part.

the front track of THAR is 1445mm.
the rear track is 1346mm.

whats the benefit of keeping the rear track shotter than the front track?

i think bolero has a similar set up!
