The scorpio M2DI is based on the the Older Scorpio 2600SZ engine and different from the Bolero DI range. The Bolero DI MDI3200TC engine is only BSIII compliant. Otherwise, the Thar MDI would have been sold in Metros.

Am looking at the MDi instead of the CRDe. No A/c or HT are not deal breakers for me - I want the open top experience - am a bike chap as far as the daily drive goes and the MDi will not change that. Again, spartan interiors are not an issue, in fact the less expensive looking the better, as I intend to use this vehicle for long journeys to some remote locations. The money that can be saved over the CRDe version is a major positive.

Thanks in advance.
I have driven the the Thar MDI, and the noise level is not high at all. I am currently using the Invader - MDI Engine with the air con, and its pretty gud as the noise level really low.

Fuel efficiency has a long way to go (2015 and beyond), this is something else.

I trust scorpio M2DI is not based on older 2600sz engine , but same as current boleros and pick ups which is BS3. My major 4wd - 2010 model and Bolero DI 4wd - 2008 are BS2 versions but 2009 Bolero SLX is BS3 micro hybrid. As trials are on for BSIV norms with DI engine and if it comes out fine , theres should not be any issues to sell DI in metros in form of THAR,BOLERO,SCORPIO or BMT etc.

@Rajith:

I hope you are right about the BSIV DI, then we will be able to buy and register the Thar MDI in metros...

@spike any comments on the M2DI? Is it same as MDI3200TC ? I think the Block is different an dthe M2DI is chain Driven..

^^ Only if the Thar MDI comes in BS-IV; Tini, you are right, Scorpio M2DI is chain driven, there are gear drive and chain drive versions of MDI 3200 engine.

Samurai,

I have been away from Team bhp due to my hectic post launch schedule and travel.Though lot has been discussed, let me put it this way about your latent desire and need-

1. Interested in some serious off roading

2. Do not need hassles- building rebuilding and rebuilding again :-)

3. On budget for initial purchase

4. Have driven old Mahindra's and hence not bothered about car like refinement as new ones are decidedly better

5. CRDe though is desireable is expensive for your requirement and modification

Decision is simple if on budget, take THAR MDI 4wd. It is your good old improved MM540 with robust chassis and bullet proof mechanicals. 51/51 axles need not be the deal breaker as the whole of India has been using it. I know 57/53 is desireable but should you hold back your purchase just because of that?

Please let me know if you are serious about THAR DI 4wd. Will help you book the vehicle.

p.s- Though both are my brands, i suggest you to take TD of both CRDe and DI together. You will know the difference.

If i were you-

If not on budget my take would be-
1. Keep your CJ 340 for pure off roading
2. THAR CRDe for long distance cruising and attending off road in Mumbai, Rajasthan then in Meghalaya of sorts.

If on budget-

1. Sell your old Cj 340 and buy THAR MDI 4wd, live trouble free life and off road happily ever after :-)

regards
Vinod

Hi Vinod,

Nice to have you back, the 51/51 is a DEAL BREAKER, because it is the WORST in the M&M Parts Bin.

How long to you want the general public to invest in sub-standard equipment or engineering?

What is the Front Track of the Bolero & Scorpio, or the Maxx Series or the Pik-Up Series? 57 Inches.

Regards,

Arka

@Arka/Vinod - what is the approximate market price difference between the 51-51 and 57/53 brand new?

Also was there any other consideration aside from costs in the decision to skimp on the axles?

Vinod,

For now I am keeping the CJ340 and bought the i10 auto. I was anyway not planning to make any move without HT & AC.

On another post it seems the track in villages is small so thats why the rational to use the 51" track.
If so why is it that the 4x4 Pickups have the 57" track?

IMO Its just the cost.

MM would you accommodate to order the MDi with this set up - 57/53?

Arka,
No doubt 57 inch front track is desireable...but tell me know how many people in T.bhp/ J.Thrills using MM540/550 have opted for 57 inch axle like you??

How many have sold their old 540's just because they had 51 inch track and under frustration that they couldnt lay hands on 57/53 track?

So many army 550's pre NGCS have been bought at absurd prices. They all had 51 inch track. All have been happy with it those who have used in off road. Are they planning to sell it only because they cant live with 51 inch track axles?

Please plan a visit to Jaipur and some time to Kerela. It is a hot bed of Naya Major market. Look at their loading and useage patterns. They abuse their vehicle much beyond what we do and all on 51 inch track and semi floating axles! None of them converted it to full floating like you.

My point here is not to prove 51 inch track axle is better than 57/53. My point is axles with 51inch track isnt a deal breaker as you may project. They are time tested and trusted by many using them day in and day out in real harsh world!

It is the same old thing- some see the glass 10% empty and others see it 90% full

p.s- Arka, in a way you are blessed. You already have the required axles with you. What are you waiting for? THAR DI 4x4 has every thing else you wanted. Why dont you pick up a THAR DI and swap axles?

Nice to have your requirement and glad your priorities are clear.

Pick ups wheel base is much longer than MM540 as you may know. Turning radius was a major concern in old LWB M&M's. Hence the track change.

51inch track isnt a deal breaker for many real customers who are willing to put their money on table rather than just writing their wish list. Even i do consider 57/53 an upgrade.... But definitely not a deal breaker!

Enough has been discussed on this topic, I rest my case here

Hi Vinod,

Arka is blessed- what about the rest of us .

Now, please do something about the quality of :

1. Switchgear.
2. Brakes - Servo and progressive pedal feel.
3. Steering Offset from drivers seat. I HATE IT- feel like a share auto driver!
4. Long Gear lever throw and clutch pedal effort like a bus!
5. The vehicle should feel light and nimble not heavy like a ton of bricks when one turns or brakes above 80-100 kph.
6. Have decent offroad worthy design built in - [flat underbody with silencer and all routing packaged in between the ladder frame!
7. Have a metal pipe instead of 8 or 6mm plastic/rubber hose running under body for brakes and the hydraulics!!

Please take a look at better designs and learn from them please.

My money is on THAR MDI iff I get ALL the above and factory fitted HT and AC - well climate controlled

Time to call the THAR a CAR!!..eh

Cheers

Hi Vinod,

51" isn't a deal-breaker in the "real" world. How are the M&M vehicles faring internationally? Get the Drift.

Can you give the above argument to the Indian Army, in the real world of Jaipur and sometime Kerala 51/51 SFRA works fine even for the heavy overloading?

w.r.t to WISH-LIST it is time M&M Walks the Talk.

And since most of INDIA, manages without Differential Locks and LSD, we should skip that one as well, incidentally most of INDIA, manages very well with a Solid Axle too.

If you are expecting me to buy a sub-standard product, brand-new, and then upgrade it, for an M&M it is not worth the effort.

Regards,

Arka
