Please let me know your opinion as to what can be the best choice from the above and from others that i may have missed.
Take either a used Pajero, or a brand new Scorpio 4x4 2.2 (9.9 lakhs ex showroom)

In second hand, I would not recommend a Mahindra 2.6 4x4. You will get one for 4-5L though if you are able to find one.

If you can stretch 2.5L go for a new Mahindra.
That said, if you are looking at loans, interest rate on new car loans is less than that of used car loans, so some of that 2.5L will be offset.

Brand new is out of question. In Jalandhar any brand new 4X4 Mahindra tops 9 lacs on road. In that case I may be better off selling the Innova, and keeping a used Fortuner and a new small car.

From your knowledge, how bad can be the maintenance of a used Pajero of 2006-07 make? and why do you discourage from buying the 2.6 Scorpio?

This was always back of my mind , is it wise to trade of a 4 year old innova and go for a user Pajero around same age .
is it still called an upgrade ? feels so because the pajero onroad price was always way north of innova .

Difficult to find a scorpio. And condition can be suspect. Due to rarer nature, asking price is often exhorbiant.
A used Pajero is a good deal, esp in PB as many independent garages are competent in supporting the Pajero, a hot favorite in punjab.
Other vehicles you can look at within 8L are a 2001-2004 LC Prado, or a 1998-2002 model LC

My two cents on the Scorpio 4WD if you can find one.. have owned one for 2 years and must say its reliability has blown my mind off. Was looking for a pajero before this and the age factor made me keep away from them. The only issue which will crop up and needs to be looked into is the electronic shifter acting cranky.. Lots of options available to correct the same.

If you want a hard top, get the Scorpio 4x4 (used to be LX, now S4). If you want a soft top get the Thar.

I would never go for a second hand vehicle as you never know when it will break down, and in remote areas that is what matters.

Pajero

Dislikes: Repair & Maintenance costs, parts availability(?)

Gypsy
Likes: Low maintenance costs, lower purchase cost
Dislikes : Cabin space/soft top

Thar
Likes: Looks/distinctly personal feel/performance/engine
Dislikes: Cabin space/soft top/ reliability & maintenance

Scorpio 2.6(4wd)
Likes: Kind of hits my sweet spot
Dislikes: availability/reliability/maintenance

Keep your options open. A used Pajero, Tata Aria, Fortuner all make sense. If you find a good example at your price , act accordingly.

My personal pick is the pajero for your purpose. I'd get to know the pajero really well or find someone who knows pajeros well. Or just buy one with all service records.

And Jalandhar is a nice place to shop around for Pajeros. Spares are not a problem.

The infrastructure company where my organization is located had a set of 4x4 2.6 Scorpios.
Though they were high mileage ones (2lakh+ kms), they were maintained in a very good condition, always serviced a regular intervals and from the Authorized Service Station (the owner of the company is very strict about these things )

All but one have been sold at around 3 lakhs; please PM me if you want any further details and I can ask around.

Regards,
Jaspreet Singh

Hi All - Today I found a 2000 make Gypsy in good shape (45k kms run). It was my kind of a car, which is a rarity here in Punjab. It never had alloy wheels and oversize tyres and is all stock!

The owner also frequently employed 4*4 and has maintained the car very well. I don't know about others, but I do a keen examination of owner's profile alongside the vehicle. This guy owned the gypsy for his stay in his cottage in Dalhousie. He seems to be a car guy and I also came away impressed with how well maintained his other cars were. He is asking 2lacs for it, which is steep I think - but perhaps par for the condition (well maintained) of the Gypsy? What do you guys feel?

I would have made the deal right away had the engine been MPFI. This gypsy has the 1.3 carburetor engine.

What kind of performance drawbacks can I expect from a carburetor engine if I were to tour with this vehicle to hills and once a while inter city trips?
Also, given the car is 15 years old, how does it effect the maintenance of the vehicle?
