Swerving at those speeds can be really dangerous... Especially if its an SUV/MUV. Sedans would probably hold on to the road better.
If this happened on a freeway, doesn't the merging lane have an equal right of way? Unless there's a 'YIELD' sign,the person can continue with caution. 98% of the time, vehicles move over to let the merging vehicle get onto the freeway. In this case,if the distance between your friend's car & the merging vechicle wasn't too much, a sudden response to swerve wouldn't have been the best of things to do.
Anyways, everyone reacts in different ways to these situations. Hope the injuries heal soon.
