Oh I've heard of a few people that do this. What they do is that they connect an audio point to the audio switcher IC, at the point where the AM circuit pre is given to the switching IC.
The AM is disconnected (A simple track cut) and the pre put is injected straight in there. You won't need a pot to be connected in series, simply because you will be using the headphone out and your MP3 player volume can be lowered to prevent clipping.
It can be done by a good technician/ engineer.
You WILL void your warranty though.
