Wyanad has this "Mess" culture - you will find a lot of small shops attached to homes with just the word "Mess" or some name attached to it.

You get terrific home food at these places. They are very basic with wooden benches and the old-style foldable steel chairs, etc. The good part is that most of these places still use wood-fired kitchens - the taste is heavenly. Even the tea tastes great when cooked over a wood fire. I'm vegetarian, but my son insists that the chicken curry is the best he's ever had and my wife says the fish fry is amazing too.

We skip lunch at Mysore so that we can eat at these places. You will find them at regular intervals on the highway after you enter Wyanad.
