I don't get it. I've yet to see an engine go dead when the clutch is pressed.

Like SS said, unless you turn off the ingition, stall the bike or run out of gas, there's no other way the engine can stop running.

By pressing the clutch, you're actually reducing the load on the engine, so the chances of it going dead are even less or impossible (if the bike is in good condition).
