Flush mounting as shown in your pic, that would weaken the plate at the bolts. But if you notice closely, we have used bolts with collar everywhere.

I didn't pick 6mm thickness randomly. All the skid plates available for GV from different vendors, had one thing in common. They were all 6mm aluminium (or aluminum for you) sheets. It appears to be the best compromise between strength and weight and workability.
