If a shell bearing or a bush bearing like in the fourstrokes is being used the crank needs to run in wet sump where it can do with the oil splash lubrication or the big end should be pressure fed; or both. The shell and bush bearings need pretty good lubrication.
This will not work with a two stroke in which the crankcase is sealed and the lube is provided by mixing the 2t in the petrol. So needle bearings are used at the big end and the small end pins. Even crank main bearings are lubricated by 2t oil in the fuel.
