The Hot-Hatch market was turned on its head when Renault launched the remarkable Clio RenaultSport 172 – the car that made ‘Va-Va-Voom’ a household phrase.
Oozing sports performance from it’s 2.0-litre 16-valve engine and with eye-catching good looks the RS remains one of the most phenomenal cars of its genre - the 0-62mph time of just seven seconds underlining the car’s credentials.
The low profile chassis and 16-inch alloys provided the clio with tremendous handling characteristics and, unlike its relative the Clio Renaultsport 172 Cup, it had the benefit of additions such as ABS and air-conditioning with a price tag under £15,000.
Combining road-going excellence with high levels of distinction the Clio RenaultSport maintained its lofty position in the fiercely-contested hot-hatch market throughout the whole time it was in production.
The Clio Sport has always been a powerful car, overcoming the Mini Cooper S (162 bhp), the Honda Civic V-tech (160 bhp) and the SEAT Ibiza Cupra R (180 bhp).
