I stay in the remote NE region of the country and for here, we don't have detailed maps, so its useless paying for satnav or mapmyindia or any other paid service. What I did was got hooked to mgmaps and am happy. It has the capability to use most online maps (google, yahoo, microsoft, openmaps). I have downloaded google maps for now from level 1 through 17 and it rocks.

I have an HP hw6828 with a BT GPS receiver and I am happy. For other parts of the country (I will mainly require Delhi+NCR) I will download the maps from google and use it.
