Actually i thought the same thing as you originally did. If there truly was an improvement in performance, I dont think its too far fetched to think that maybe a loose plug cable was moved, or a sensor that was not connected properly was moved or a electrical component that was shorting is now insulated (WD40 is an insulator) etc etc

The same way as starting sprays are used (and really help).
You spray some on the air filter and the car which was having trouble starting now starts with ease.

Though i agree with you that what comes out of most of these sprays will evaporate easily - but WD40 doesnt evaporate that easily does it?

Anyway, thats just the other side of the coin. Quite likely that it is just a placebo effect
