this is because the front of the car has crumple zones. the car takes the impact and does not allow it to travel to the passenger compartment. Most mordern day cars have stronger rear ends in terms of minimal / non-existant crumple zones in the rear.

hence - in the evnet of an impact- the car in front - gets away with minor injuries - and the one that rear ends - ends up like a bashed up boxer.
