Even if you decide to swap in a diesel you might want to keep the petrol in storage. If there is an energy crunch you will then have 2 options to choose from. I think the petrol engine will tend to be more flexible and adaptable to a new fuel because of the spark ignition whereas a diesel is rather limited in the fuels it can use due to it's high compression and compression ignition. Saying this does not make me happy because I prefer diesels generally.
