making your tweeter pods i had always wanted to fabricate my own pods, and after hearing the difference they make ( in godji's car ) i was all the more determined
i found that its quite inexpensive and easy too ( however the finished product may not be as neat as godjis custom made pods by an installer himself)
heres the procedure i used.
Step 1 :
option A
goto to sister/wife/mum and ask if she has any cup cake moulds with a diameter thats approx that of your stock tweeter housing
Option B
go buy the aluminium moulds as shown in the 1st picture from your neighbourhood vessel wala- approx 14rs a piece
Option C
i found that if moulds are not available then the local SS salt and pepper shakers (apprx 24rs/pc )available in any market serve as good pods. ( just unscrew the bottom and hey presto you have the cylindrical pod
Step 2
now you need a base for the cylindrical pods
For that you can either construct an SS triangular frame or use the easy way out -WOOD.
i would advice teak wood 1 inch wide by 10-12 mm thick.now sandpaper off a curvature so that your pod sits firmly in place as shown in the 2nd pic.
You may also provide an angle so as to tilt the tweeter in the upward direction.(sanpaper the base at a 30 degree tilt for this if you want)
Step 3
drill 4-5 mm hole on the closed flat face of pod to pass your wire
Step 4
Feviquick the pod and base together
Step 5
Get the pod and base powdercoated/ painted as you want
Note: the wooden base is not easy to powdercoat.the heat may cause blisters if not controlled.(i had access to a powder coating plant where i could control stuff . if you dont ,i advice to powder coat the aluminium pod seperately and spray paint the wooden base and then stick them)
Step 6
use two way tape to stick on your dashboard.
i have read that people like off axis arrangement ( where i assume that the left tweeter points to the driver and the right tweeter points to co passenger- however i was not very impressed with this arrangement - i.e i didnt find the soundstage wide enough.
so i directed each tweeter to point at the centre - i.e between the driver and co-passenger seats. - i found the soundstage to my liking
i found on axis arrangement to also give a better soundstage than Off axis
(these are my opinions- to each his own)
Total cost
Aluminium pods 12*2 =24 rs
feviquick - rs 5
WOOD free, labour - myself, powder coating -in house (though i dont think anyone would charge more than 10-15 bucks a piece)
P.S : thanks godji for the advice and inspiration (ohh and yes i did get the doors re damped!)
next project hopefully will be building a sealed bass tube from a 3mm SS pipe after trying a SWWS just for kicks
