HDD won't last long... no shock protection can help the vibrations in a car (potholes, hard brakes etc.)

If you see the latest laptops which use the similar hdds .. they have shock prevention software which spins down the HDD in case any vibrations are detected.

I assume ipod have HDDs similar to the laptop ones. well in that case one can get a USB case for a 1.8" hard disk only that the biggest 1.8" HDD I know is about 100GB. 2.5" are 600GB so you can store your music without compression but you'd need a tagger (like ID3 or FLAC).

the ipod has a 1.8 hdd which are much more slimmer and compact than the 2.5 hdd . My older ipod once fell down after that a folder symbol came on the screen. I tried ever thing form reseting the ipod to reformating it . it did not helped. after that I borwed my friend ipod change the hdd then it work . the thing I wanna tell is that the ipod is also a fragile product so ever body who has a HDD base player handle it with care............
