Alternative material for damping - Page 4 - Team-BHP

Gurus

If Damping is all about increasing the weight of the vibrating body and hence reduce or stop the vibration but then what about the weight.

How much Weight does it increases if applied as far as front doors fitted with components are considered in a swift(or any other car)?

Does the increased weight hamper the performance, mileage of the car?

Does the increased weight bother the suspensions of the car as this weight becomes permanent?

Dont know if my questions are appropriate but just struck with these questions as i am planning ICEing up my swift and would encounter the vibration situation.

My doors have already been damped with the Butyl Rubber cum crosslink foam sandwich as mentioned in the Damping material and sound deadner thread.

I'd really recommend Noise Kill as its cheap and does the job really well!

Moreover, I've noticed that in many cases its things like the power window assembly which rattle rather than the door itself.

Ideally eliminate all these rattles first. One could use a filler like silicon rubber around the screws / bolts.
Only after getting rid of these rattles should you contemplate the need for damping.

You can shed a few kgs yourself!! jogging is the key!!

@LBM : At Rs 220 for a 10x10 mat , I'd say it's affordable.

One of our members have raised an interesting question on the alternative material(during an offline chat):

how safe are these alternative material to fire?? e.g. shrivz found a low cost alternative in the form of dual adhesive rubber. when the rubber burns, it is not easy to stop it.

I think the material used should also be fire-retardant. Btw, are the conventional damping material used are fire-retardant???

you can add the cotton waste (used for stuffing boot) to that list.

Thats is a valid concern. But i think all the butyl rubber based damping available commercially would fall under the list too.

I got the NoiseSkill 12 x 12 inch sheet for Rs 150 per sq ft.

I guess almost all different types of damping material available in the market is flammable including dynamat..

What thickness should i look for ?
2mm, 3mm, 4mm ????

thicker they will fall off, thinner they will will not work...best is 2mm IMHO along with thick aluminum sheet.

thick aluminium over a 2 - 3mm sheet sounds perfect!
The sheets I used were about 1.5mm thick, but I used cross-link foam over it..

I couldnt find self adhesive sheets

However one shop had a roll of thin neoprene, no smell, light weight, flexible and Rs110 per kg. It was perfect in all ways except that it wasnt self adhesive.

Is it possible to stick it with a rubber based adhesive ? And if i do that what should i use to apple pressure until the adhesive cures ?
