Question

I have a WagonR. I have a Sony HU and also had bad quality speakers. I was in Pune and am sure the dealer cheated me. He charged me 5K for a pair of 6X9 Sony speakers, but after a year the speaker walls cracked. Now whenever i turn it on it has that broken sound. So pleas consider that i DONT have speakers. I listen to all kinds of music. My budget is 10K (Please note i already have the HU).

I want to buy original speakers this time. I was looking at JBL GTO 937. Can anyone tell me how much the original ones cost in India. Why i am asking is, i am in US now and they retail for 150$ at Crutchfield. So if its cheaper i would buy them and take them with me when i return.

I would also want to know whether i need an AMP to make most out of this speakers. Also please suggesy some good quality speakers for the front.

Other brand/model advices are also welcome. I have a fiber (Classique) board on the back on which i ould place the speakers.

Welcome to the ICE section!

First things first. Buying a speaker from Crutchfield is only advisable when a certain speaker is not available here or when there's a big price difference. In your quest for 937s, it's available here with warranty & a very cool price tag. So, I'll rather suggest you to buy here.

2.
It's your front speakers which are more important than the rears. So, it's always worth spending more on the front soundstage.
I'll suggest you to get JBL 607ce Component speaker system for the front to go with the 937.

3.
An amp can make a very good improvement to your car audio. Get a 4channel amp and add to your setup.

4.
In your budget of 10k, it's quiet difficult to get all the above mentioned stuff. So, I'll suggest you to upgrade gradually, ie; step by step.
So, buy the 937 now. After you collect some dough, get Compos and a 4channel amp like JBL CS60.4 and power all the speakers from it.

5.
Since you're considering other brands, I would suggest you to try Hertz. Their speakers sound very good and build quality is one of the best. Their entry level (DIECI series) are far better than other brands which are available on the same price range. In that case, you can opt for a DCX 6X9s for the rear and DSK compos for the front.

6.
Since you're in US now, you can have a look around for more better brands which are hard to get in India. (They may make the pocket a bit lighter though)

7.
Your ears and the thing in between are the best judges for your audio. So, Listen!
Go to a few shops and take some time to check out different speakers. They'll give you a good idea of the way how each sounds.

SpeedZAK, thanks for the response. As you have already understood i am a newbie in this and am depending on knowledgable and helpful BHPians like you. Could you let me know the prices for the 937 and 607ce in India and the places where i can buy original ones with warranty in Bangalore. I dont want to take any chances with my hard earned money. One question, can i buy the front comp system and 937 now and add the AMP later? I am not looking for a woofer, though.
Is Hertz a better brand than JBL. I know its very subjective, but i want to know your take on this.

My SONY HU says 50WX4.

Thanks once again. Looking forward to your reply.

As for the prices of JBLs, PM Sam. Oops! He prefers email to PM these days.

You can go to SoundFactor somewhere in Lavelle road for buying JBL.

You can buy the compos and ovals now and power it from the HU for the timebeing. Later on, you can buy an amp and connect speakers to it.
I hope your HU has atleast 2 preouts so that it can be connected to the amp suitably.

As you've asked a Brand specific question, it may be very much debatable.
If you just want to know my take about your question of JBL vs HERTZ, my vote goes to HERTZ all the way. Yes, they were indeed better than JBLs of same price range. Remember, this is just my personal take.
dont count it as a judgement.

hyper, my vote goes to Hertz too. But by a narrow margin, and at a slightly higher price point.

I recently listened to Hertz DSK 165s (Dieci series) and Hertz ESK 165s (Energy Series). I personally prefer the sound of the ESKs to the DSKs. I'd also listened to JBL GTO637s and 607s. I quite liked the sound too. But I liked the Hertz ESKs better. But I think they are priced a little higher than all the others I've mentioned.

They would run to a bit more than 8k and eat up most of your budget. If you can stretch the total to say Rs.13K, you will be able to get a good pair of coaxials for the back. Ideally you should buy the same brand (and the same series in the brand) for the front and back. You can fit comps in the front and co-axials in the back for a VFM install.

Now this is my experience, based on my tastes in music. Why don't you listen to these brands and decide? You can't go wrong with either of these 2 brands. As long as you don't buy Sony speakers (and most Pioneers) you will be ok.

Your 50x4 HU should power the speakers well enough till you can plonk a 4 channel amp into the set-up (which you should do when you can afford to spend the money).

GTO937 sells in India for Rs. 4950 (this is the MSRP which includes VAT etc ) team-BHPians have been known to get better prices than this, in bangalore

It's much cheaper in India mate.

speed, one small questions. I am definitely going for the JBLs. But you had mentioned that i can add a 4 channel AMP later (when i have moolah) if my HU has 2 pre-amp outs. My questions in, what if not (I am not sure. I would have to find out when i return to India). Does it mean that if my HU does not have 2 pre-outs I cannot add a AMP later? If no, does it mean i have change the HU when i want to add a AMP. If yes, what are the workarounds?

Don't complicate yourself my dear boy.

Most HUs have atleast one pair of pre-outs. Any HU that costs more than 5-6K (rupees) will have what you need.

And one more thing baba, there is no need to quote the ENTIRE post everytime, take what you need and delete the rest.

Congratulations & best lucks on choosing JBL. You wont go wrong with a JBL.

As Sam said, most of the HUs these days have atleast one preout. So, if you remember the model no of your HU, post it here so that the gurus will be able to judge on that.

But, as you're not intending to get a sub and just want to play with speakers, it would be wise to go for a 4channel amp & power all the speakers from it. And for a 4channel amp to run properly, you need 2 preouts.

Anyway, get the speakers. And power it from the HU for now with some nice quality cables. And amp solution can be decided once you're back here.

What say?

JBL makes just one wiring kit. It contains some amplifier power cable, earthing cable, remote turn on cable, one set of RCAs. There are no models and no choices, as essentially JBL is not a cable company. But this one kit is super high quality and VFM. These are sold at 2950 all inclusive. They are not easy to come by.
There are many other companies in India with decent car cables such as stinger, monster, audison and more. Please avoid Boss.

Arrey baap re lol

If you have an HU and 4 speakers, you only need speaker wire. Nothing else. No RCA nothing. You need speaker wire and that comes with the speaker. If you want better quality, it costs about 75-85 rupees a metre.

When you buy an amplifier, then worry about power and RCA.

Oh ok. Thanks. I would get the speaker wires from Audison/Monster. I think i would be able to spend rs.85/meter for good quality wires and also get speaker connectors rather than get the wires "soldered" to the speakers. They are bad and break and also damage the speakers.

Good choice Hyper!

Audison speaker cables are very good in quality and they perform well.

Now, you can request the mods to close this thread as you've finalised your plans. You can later open it for pics/reports/further discussions.
