What does the term baffle in the following sentence from a BHP post mean? The front speaker enclosure in the Santro has no baffle.

In Pioneer DEH-P7950UB, I've found the following features. Can someone please explain the following nomenclatures and their specific uses ?

1. Rotary Commander
2. Direct Sub Drive
3. BMX (Bitmetric Equalizer)
4. Spectrum analyzer

1. Rotary commander: It's the round knob used on the player to control all the features. With this round commander you can navigate through all the menus in the player. you can turn the knob, or push it in, press it to the right, left, up or down like a joy stick.

2. Direct Sub drive: A few of the pioneers advertise their capability to drive a sub directly through the HU. Although the sound will leave you wanting for an amp. It is not advisable as the HU will not be able to give sufficient power to the sub.

3. BMX: It is an equalizer setting which allows you to modify the frequency response curve. You can adjust the bass, treble frequency points.

4. Spectrum analyser: Just shows you the frequency bands and how they are adjusted. Basically a display effect.

One correction. I got confused between EQ-EX and BMX. BMX is just a correction for MP3's. since there is a loss of some frequencies in MP3, BMX corrects it by increasing the level of frequncies.

also the BMX is a alpine thing and the EQ-EX is a pioneer thing.......both the things are a total waste and should be disabled every time as they are just loundness function with a different name......

Does BMX "really" provide any noticeable difference in the audio quality of the MP3's since I couldn't detect any difference with my co-axials ?

OR is it just a waste as mentioned by LBM ?

Well it does bring about a little difference. But now almost all the systems from pio have the BMX. It's not a deciding factor but you can play around with it.

I think you have connected your speakers with the HU.....now even if you enabled the BMX the HU amp has not got enough juice that one can feel the differnce in increase of lower freq....but you can surely feel the gain in higher freq that also not so major as the coaxial cannot reproduce them much.....

and like VID said is it not a deciding factor for getting the HU.....

Baffle - usually a soft material (foam, thin ply etc) that is used while mounting a speaker to the door. It serves to protect the speaker from dirt/rust/dust/water etc as well as keeping the woofer tightly in place.

I hate this is not the meaning of baffle in the previous post....the term in context there is the mounting place of the speaker......or we can say the mounting plate.....like when we mount the sub in the rear deck it is termed as infinite BAFFLE.....here infinte as the sub is opened in the boot and it a very big enclosure.....thats why infinte....and baffle is the mounting on the deck.....hope this clears the doubt......

the baffle you are confused is to protect the driver as you mentioned but it is acoustically transparent......

IB means that the sub is in an enclosure that is so huge it might was well be infinite.

What you guys are refering to is the GRILL. The problem with the stock front speaker location in the santro is that the grill/baffle combo hangs down (it is moulded but it looks like it is hanging) from the dash this means that atleast once side of the grill/baffle is not closed. This means that there is a certain ammount of bass cancelation.

The GRILL in in front of the speaker and protects the speaker from prying fingers and the baffle is what he speaker is mounted on. In the Santro the grill acts like a baffle as the speaker is mounted behind it and directly to it. Very shoddy i you ask me.
