Agent Smith.
You said it yourself the bass tube is a encloure with sub inside it...

no it does not provide a special function except some design looks....

Bass Tube = 'boomier' bass.
Listen to both and choose your preferred poison.

since a bass blocker rolls of pretty slow even one that starts at 300Hz will allow some bass through. at 6db.octave a 300hz "cutoff" means that at 75Hz you are only -12db down. I'd rather tune by ear. if you find that your fronts are too bass shy and are willing to sacrifice some SPL to get more bass upfront by all mean up the 470uf to a smaller cap (330 or 270 or 220uf).

Then cut a piece out of 1/2" ply or mdf of a size slightly larger than the hole and screw it on.

Navin means to say that this way you can seal the box and get rid of port action which could be contributing to boominess.

not really B&T, you should know me better. I was looking to make the port into an speriodic vent.

That is why i say cotton socks. When I used them a pair of my cotton sports socks were thick enough to stuff a 3" port. Nylon and other thnner socks wotn help.

Hmm, I thought maybe that wouldn't be totally appropriate since the enclosure must be reasonably large and aperiodic vents make most sense when enclosure is undersized and it is desirable to reduce box Q.

true, B&T just that the socks are a handy method. on can ofcourse take more pairs and stuff the hole so that there is less leakage.
