How effective is sound deadening material in tackling rattling ? - Team-BHP

Rattling is a problem faced by many car owners. It is a thing which recurs. Will using sound deadening material be useful in curbing the menace? If possible how can it be used, like placing in panels,beadings,rubber and metal parts etc. Try to post some firsthand experience or even hearsay .

rattling means something's loose.

Surely the only cure for that is finding it and stopping it rattling.

Sound deadening would seem to be a good idea against inevitable noise --- engine, road, wind etc.

Can't see the point of it for 'optional' noises.

I have heard people applying it for managing common ratttling.

I'd like to get rid of the tyre noise and engine noise too (if its possible)

Emperor cochin do this job. But not sure on rattling which i mentioned.

What @swathyd, or whoever told that, observed was an after-effect: in dismantling and applying sound insulation or damping sheets, the rattle-and-buss-removal would be incidental benefit if the person doing it has 'touched' each and every part without skipping anything.

The rattles & buzzes (different frequencies, that's all) are all about ill-fitting components and cables hitting against metal or FRP/ABS sheet areas. If you put dampening material, the noise of hitting reduces (gets damped out). Also, whatever was unduly loose gets tightened without making much ado. End-result: reduction in noise, which is what was desired.

Engine, tyre and road noise is another ball game. These are the root causes of the rattles and buzzes, but removing them is neither easy nor cheap. It is cheaper to apply damping sheets and tie-strips.

For the most of us all we can do is probably add a layer of damping to the floor baord from the fire wall to the rear seat and some underbody damping spray. Even this is will make a small difference moticeable below 60kmph. As one goes faster wind noise etc.. will take over.

there all lots of noises in the car which will take a lots of effort to eliminate them and it depends what is causing the noise.

Identifying the source can be a real pain in the behind.
Has anyone got a rattling dashboard fixed? In my Lancer's case, the sounds vary from rattling in various parts to squeaks and creaks from the A/C vents and the plastic trims. What would be a solution to this? The noise really gets to me sometimes.

If you need to get rid of floor noise - car - i.e. You may post the querry in the car section - not in ICE.
All said, for Floor noise - wuerth makes great products. You may go on line and research it from their web site. It is sold in India.

However, for audio purposes - damping material too is essential. Specially in SPL installs.
The only drawback is the 'weight' it adds to the car.

Sprays are easy to use - however - not effective in my opinion. They are only good to reach places where the hand cannot install.
Application process too is important. Needs to be done - slowly & correctly.

I suggest you listen to a car with it & one without it & you will know what I am suggesting. The difference is too much not to nitice.

However, if you have a 'rattle' in your car from somthing that is 'loose' then fit that [fix] independently.

I have noticed that my under body treatment from 3M whiich leaves the underbody of the car covered with some rubber like substance considerable reduces the noise level in the cabin

When I did the damping for my ICE, I noticed that tyre noise was getting filtered to an extent.

Well i have tried sponge and it works upto some extent to reduce rattles and boot noises.

Tried the sponge in Zen boot and it does the damping job for 1 306 DVC.
